Defiling effecting the Caster?

I've been reading the Dragon Lance campaign setting and came across an interesting variant rule called tge Curse of the Magi.

How the rule works is that whenever a character casts an arcane spell he must make a Fort save vs a DC 10+the level of the spell after the spell is cast. If the caster succeeds nothing happens. If he fails, he is then fatigued. If he fails another he goes from fatigued to exhausted. If he fails a thrid save he falls unconscious.

Could this not be applied to defiling in some way? I figure defiling must take its toll on the caster in some way.

It would be interesting.

However, I think defilers are more about harming things around themselves.

It's alot harder to be a preserver than a defiler.

I realize that, but I would think syphoning the life energy from the world itself would put some sort of strain on a defiler. Especially when done at such an accelerated rate.

Do keep in mind that defiling is supposed the easier way to cast magic, the one which leads faster to power. If you incorporate Fort saves after spell casting this shuld be "outbalanced" by some more power for a defiler.

I also realize this. I was leading into that maybe with a rule akin to this that the benefits from defiling could be justified in being scaled up in power.
