KoD and the difference between EL/ CR

Hi all,

I wondered why no one has mentioned this before but did you notice that the KoD module rewards XP based on EL, not on CR?

According to the DMG, XP should be awarded on a per creature basis, measured by the CR of every creature involved.

So fighting 5 Hobgoblins will award 5x CR 1 (I hope hobgoblins are CR 1) divided by the number of chars around (lets assume there are 4 of them)

KoD instead would present some kind of EL, in this example possibly EL 3 for the encounter.

Does anyone else find this odd?

In the above example, if a group of PCs were fighting 5 Hobgoblins, you would give out experience as if it was a CR 3 monster, not 5 CR 1s.

When monsters are in groups, you give out XP as though they are one big monster, not lots of little individuals.

EL is a "what all of these monsters 'add up' to" kinda thing.

Hope that helps.

Thats wrong. Reread pages 36/ 37 of the DMG. It lists how to award XP after a fight.

EL is just a tool for the dm to rate the general difficulty of an encounter.
EL in and off itself does not award XP.

Only the individual CR of any monster counts toward earned XP.

The KoD seems to err on this one, too.

EL may be used for the same purpose as individual monster CR. As it's a combined measure of the challenge of an encounter, the DM can use it instead of each monster's individual CR for determining XP awards. In 3.5, the DMG uses the method that was developed in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, taking each defeated monster separately, but if the party overcomes the challenges then you can substitute the EL and compare each character's level to that for the experience award, which is then divided by how many characters took part in the encounter.

Experience awards, CR and EL are very fluid in this regard. There are a number of ways to handle it, all of which result in an equivalent rate of advancement commensurate to the challenges overcome.

Cheers,

Odd then....hmmm...Dungen Magazine seems to err on this matter all the time then....it isnt a big deal, it works either way with minimal difference. It just takes a lot of the repetetiveness out of the XP calculation at the end of a session.
