I'm currently running a play test group for my homebrew setting, and eventually Spelljamming becomes a major part of every day life, however they're playing in a time period where only 2 helms exist on the planet. Last night, they found one of them...

The magic user, A human paragon/battle sorcerer attempted a use magic device roll to activate the (standard minor helm)
now since a sorcerer casts on the fly - exactly would would be the effect of a bard, sorcerer or any spell casting class that doesn't prepare spells for day, using a standard helm (be it major or minor)

The character If I remember correctly critically succeded his UMD roll and just to be silly I said the ship it happened to be on shot out of the water a bit and had a big speed burst but then landed in the ocean again.

Any thoughts on this?

The simplist method would be to simply have everybody move the ship at their caster level. Thus all PC-classes could move a ship with a standard helm. Alternately, you could have sorcerers & like casters unable to use a regular helm, but can use a series helm. Maybe some feats to let a sorcerer to use a regular helm, if you're in the mood. I think the first method is the path of least resistance.

I don't think that use magical device is applicable to a Spelljamming helm.

Although it is a magical device it is not a normal magical device. Instead it grabs the magical energy from a spellcaster and turns it into Spelljamming energy. A rogue for example might try to use his UMD skill to get a helm to function but would not be able to provide the power to the ship even if their player made the right dice roll.

I think that someone should either be able to Spelljam all of the time or none of the time.

(Mind you there is nothing to stop you making characters role to control the ship when they first start Spelljamming. After all Spelljamming is a skill that needs to be learned. I think that your groups Sorcerer bouncing the ship across the water is quite realistic for a first time attempt. I can imagine your wildspace NPC's s****ing at the Groundling learner driver when they get to meet him.)

(BTW: Don't forget that even if a Sorcerer casts spells on the fly he has still formed a link with the ship by sitting in the Helm and should not be able to cast spells for the rest of the day.)

I think a UMD roll would cause the helm to React, but not to function, personally
