I will soon be running my first ever Dragonlance campaign. I’m fairly new to the setting, having read the Chronicles series and being half-way through Legends. I have all of the new rpg books, and I am running the Key of Destiny adventure, starting off with The Sylvan Key in the Campaign book. The problem I have is that my players are all Dragonlance newbies, and I do not feel confident enough with my knowledge yet to help them come up with backgrounds for their characters. I want this game to be a very role-playing heavy one, rather than the usual hack-and-slash, so I am hoping I can get some help coming up with detailed backgrounds for each character.

Listed below are the characters that my players have created. I have also listed the details about them that the players have come up with so far. If anyone wants to have a go at fleshing out a background for any of these I would be greatful!:D

Kaden Crownguard, LG
Cleric of Kiri-Jolith. Brother to Caladan. Squire of the Crown. Age 19. Wise and charismatic. Wants to be a Knight of Solamnia.

Caladan Crownguard, LG
Fighter. Brother to Kaden. Squire of the Crown. Age 21. Worships Kiri-Jolith. Strong. Wants to be a Knight of Solamnia.

Silvanthalos, CG
Half-Silvanesti Ranger. Age 32. Favoured Enemy is Minotaur. Taking the ranged combat route. Worships Habbakuk. Agile and wise.

Shanthalas Moonsun, CG
Qualinesti Wizard. Age 120. Abjurer. Wants to become a WoHS. Weak but intelligent.

Milo Quickstep, NG
Kender Rogue. Age 22. Typical Kender. Non-afflicted. Agile and charismatic.

Gregory
Human Ranger. Age 24. Taking the two-weapon combat route. Bit of a loner. Lives on the outskirts of Pashin. Possibly has links to the Legion of Steel.

The PCs enter Pashin in the following groups:

Kaden, Caladan and Shanthalas, having met on their journey to the town.

Silvanthalos and Milo. Milo met Silvanthalos in the forest and decided he looked like a nice chap to hang around with for a while. Silvanthalos decided to lead him to Pashin and get him somewhere a bit safer, away from the Minotaurs.

Gregory will not be meeting up with the group until they leave Pashin.

Can't say I've read that. The players just grabbed the sirname out of the suggested ones from the Dragonlance Campagin Setting book. Can anyone expand on this, as I may be able to use it in their backgrounds?

The Crownguards have been along corrupt Solamnic family. Not necessarily evil...just politically corrupt. We haven't heard much from them since Knight's Sword (which was a truly evil Crownguard). But Derek Crownguard was responsible for trying to block Sturm Brightblade's petition to join the knighthood. They long been opponents to the Wistans (or whatever they're called) and the Brightblades...and it may have even been a Crownguard who was responsible for betraying Sturm's father (but I don't remember for sure). Generally speaking, they were just weren't very good people. Think corrupt and power hungry politician.

But that may all be different now. Like I said, the last Crownguard we saw was in a module that took place about 5 years (give or take) after the Blue Lady's War.

To be fair, most of the Crownguards weren't that bad. Derek's brother is a shining example of knighthood, in fact - you can read about him in the short story, "Glory Descending", which is about Derek's experiences at Castle Crownguard right before he, Aran Tallbow, and Brian Donner leave for Tarsis.

Derek was a jerk, but the family name isn't entirely besmirched.

Cam

How about this for an idea:

The Crownguard brothers were accepted an Squires to the Crown after being put forward by their Uncle. Unfortunately some of the other Squires would not let them forget the deeds that some members of the family had commited in past years. To try and prove themselves as honourable and worthy of being Knights of Solamnia, the brothers decided to leave Solamnia and travel for a while, hoping to do some good in the world after the torrid times of recent years. Their plan was to come back to Solamnia after travelling and prove to those who had taunted them that they were fit to be Knights. They got passage on a merchant ship from Starport that was travelling North around Ansalon. They were to work onboard and help out in case of any trouble. Luckily they managed to make it Mem-Thon without incident, and then travelled overland with the merchants caravan to Pashin, where there adventure will begin.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

Sounds very reasonable to me, Tobias.

Maybe these new Crownguards would like to bring back a sense of honor to their familial name?

Following Tobias' idea, and adding Silvanthalos:
(This will ignore the original background to a degree, as it fits better with some of my ideas. Take or ignore what you wish.)

Silvan was working with his father, who was a scout for the knights. Teased by tuires. and ignored by the knights, save the brothers, to join his friends, but he had a more personal reason.
Now Silvan has heard of what has befallen his mother's people, and sworn a blood oath against the minotaurs. True he hates the Nerakans, but with two Solamnics by his side he believes he can concentrate on punishing the minotaurs.

Now of course the brothers and Silvan don't always seem eye to eye, they're desires to see good done bind them.
