What would be a possible justifacation for a gnome to go out adventuring (other than working on his life quest) I'm trying to develop a gnomish combat character (either fighter or monk) but i just can't seem to come up with an actual reason why a gnome would seek out others to go adventuring with. The gnomish description just doesn't support that. Obviously the life quest is an important aspect of every gnome, but using that as motivation for adventuring is kind of limiting. What else would get a gnome out of Mt. Nevermind and out into the world of adventure and excitement?

Well.. revenge for wrongs done to him? desire for wealth? simple curiousity and need for exploration? Dedication to a particular cause? A promise to a dying loved one? Maybe his parents were killed by an invention they spent their entire lives working on and now he has abandoned his LifeQuest in pursiut of greater things...

Obviously he (or she) is not stereotypical, so you don't need to stick to the stereotypical reasoning laid down in the gnomish description. Any reason that any adventurer would go out could hold true for a gnome as well.

Likewise, a gnome could be a mad gnome. Maybe he gets frustrated with Mt. Nevermind's tendency to overcomplicate things, and decides to go out into the world, inventing things that work.

Maybe his life quest deals with war and battle (ultimate weapon?) and he wants to compare the various weapons of the world in order to build the ultimate one.

A gnome monk :D They would throw him out in an instant if he/she cannot control the speed of his/hers speech.

Now, a "fighter" is a little more compatible. Surely gnomes occupy themselves with mechanisms and the likes so an adventure hook could possibly consist of finding certain "exotic" materials for a specific machinery.

Unfortunately, gnomes are linked to machines and thus their adventure spectrum is limited. I cannot think of any novel right now that presented anything but gnomes as funny little beings who talk quickly.

Or, you could be a gnome-at-arms. :D

Thanks for the suggestions, help is always appriciated. Some interesting ideas to be sure. I just wish that the DLCS had managed to expand on the concept of a gnomish adventurer somewhat instead of sticking directly to the material thats been established in the books. Specfically the fact that gnomes aren't anything but fast talking, quick thinking, comedic relief type characters. It seems quite limiting. Though I realize the authors of the DLCS may not have had a great deal of creative licence to alter the gnomes from whats already been writen about them, so in that sense I suppose its understandable.

I think maybe the Races of DragonLance book (Or whatever it will be called) coming out next year may expand on them more.

Maybe a gnome takes a life quest to dicover the secrets of "Aventureing." He or she could be a on the CommitteeforResearchingthephenomonomofwhyotherracesgoadvantureing, andtounderstanditistotryityourselfmethodeofapproach.

Or you could be out and about trying to make the perfect melee weapon as a life quest. What better way to test it than to go out in the world and use it.

I had a player of mine in 2ed DL that made weapons. Gnardo was his name. One of his creations was the Helmhammer. It was a small warhammer attached to a helm that would come swinging down on his oppenents. Needless to say sometimes it would malfunction and hit Gnardo himself, knocking him right out. eventually the contraption became so large that it took a shoulder brace just to hold on the head. It was so large it was more of a chore to put it on. By the time a combat sequence was over Gnardo was ready. It made for great comedy.

My personal favorite is one mentioned on these boards. A gnome chef's life quest is to make a recipe that every race in DL will enjoy.

If it a Monk, then maybe he mtive for adventuring could be to get away from the craziness that is Mt. Nevermind. If he is a Fighter he could be trying to "field test" any weapons and armor made by Gnomes in Mt Nevermind or even ones he makes himself.
