I posted this in another thread, and no one responded, so I thought I'd ask it here to draw a little more attention to it, so here goes:

This might be a funny question, and sorry if this is general knowledge, but I needed to clarify something.. Huma's lance (the one he used to bring down Takhisis) was a dragon mounted, full sized lance, which is a bit ungainly for a person on foot to wield.

Does the lance in the KoD take this into consideration, or is the lance being written off as a footman's lance for the ease of the adventure (and thus, ease of transport and wielding)

The reason I ask is the true lance of Huma would probably be somewhere in the vicinty of 10-15 feet long (much larger than a standard lance in order to clear the front of a dragon mount and still be effective). That is a bit unwieldly for a person on foot, to say nothing of the difficulty of trying to conceal a weapon that big (and potentially heavy). Not to mention the massive magical aura that sucker would have.

Any thoughts?

Well...a mounted lance was 16 feet long, and a footman's lance (like what Laurana is sporting on the original cover of Dragons of Winter Night) is only 8 feet long.

So...the question is, which was Huma's lance?

I would say it is definately a mounted lance...but seeing as how it apparently had the power to turn itself into a battle axe, I don't see why it couldn't turn itself into a footman's lance. heh heh

I don't remember...how was it portrayed in Eve of the Maelstrom?

Hmm, a battleaxe eh? I must have missed that somewhere. I'm not doubting you, just curious where that was, so I can look it up. Ease of carrying the lance will be a major concern if and when the group finds it, so I wanted to make sure all the bases are covered. Being able to change the shape of the lance into more manageable shapes/sizes would be very helpful.

My group is very much of the mindset of taking something extremely powerful along, ONLY provided they can carry it easily. They found one of the sides of the legendary obsidian chest, and left it behind because it was a little bulky. It would suck to have them find the lance, see how big it is, and decide "woah, look how big that sucker is! No way are we carrying that thing outta here! Leave it!"- That will make the next steps in the adventure a little more tricky.

I assume that its in a novel that it states that Huma's lance can turn into a battle axe?

Kaz, the Minotaur...Kaz found an axe he called Honor's Face. I think it turned out in Land of the Minotaurs that Honor's Face was in fact Huma's dragonlance.

Which raises a second question...in Legend of Huma, after the battle and Heart crashed to the earth...Huma gets up, and doesn't he grab a footman's lance that was strapped to Heart's saddle? I kinda remember a scene like that, I just don't remember when or where it was. Perhaps that is the Huma's Lance that we are using. But I don't think so, since this is supposed to be the same lance that speared Malys in EotM.

I would rule that Huma's lance can change from footmans or mounted as a move equivalent action.

It does state in KoD that it is believed that the lance has other special qualities (insert DM creativity here).
