for all you D/S buffs who loved the DS games by SSI, there is now a Persistant World called Athas Reborn available to players of NWN... it's an attempt to recreate one of those games, and they've done some interesting things with it... even if you don't play avidly, I recommend taking a look at their site (currently down) at www.members.aol.com/pristinetower/athas_reborn.htm for ideas and such. It's been inspiring for my PnP world... which is a homebrew that mixes Ravenloft, Dark Sun, and Planescape aspects...
