Alright, we're starting a campaign in Ravenloft we're in Borka (sp)? right now. I'm one of the three outside people. Right now my character is true neutral, and worships Hala. He's pretty reserved, and doesn't outright argue with some of the shadier people in our party, mostly avoiding them. I'm not really familiar with the Ravenloft campaign setting, and really need help making a background, because I want some Ravenloft involvement, not just stuff about when I was in forgotten realms. He dabbles in some magic, and considers himself knowledgeable in the arcane and divine arts. I plan to make him a dweomerkeeper/divine disciple.

It's Borca. With a "c", FYI.
Which is a very Italian land with slight romainian influences. Think wines and sloped grassy hills with strong religious influences (the Church of Ezra) with the Great Cathedral being in one of the cities.
The land is filled heavy mountains and thick woods rife with wolves and poisonous plants. But also some very diverse herbs and curative plants.
The land is divided into the poor that work very, very hard trying to maintain their lives and the rich that also work very, very hard trying to maintain their status of living. A few rich landholders hold all and surrounding nobels rise and fall with some regularity.

So as a priest(es) of Hala you may be intrested in the more witchy aspects of spellcasting focusing on herbs and brews and the like. Or have respect for all faiths and be interested in clerical research.
Fallen nobels are always good family, or rising ones dissowned due to their poor moral choices. Or he could be continualy poor and hoping to better himself through religion.

Good (and appropriate) Borcan backgrounds have a tendency to involve marital infidelity, revenge, sibling rivalry, double-crosses, courtly intrigue and more.

Alot of people also equate or tie Borca into some form of Mob-land brining in elements of the maffia, Godfather movies and Goodfellas so those are easy to steal liberally from.

Two things to remember:

a) When told about Hala, most people associate it with small groups of healers who try to keep a (very) low profile in regard to the local authorities (though the latter sometimes learn the hard way it doesn't pay to mess with them, as what happened in Falkovnia demonstrated..)

b) Arcane magic is - with a few exceptions - reviled in this world. "Let's burn him to the stake!" reviled, if you get the drift...

Apart from Dementlieu, Darkon and Hazlan, expect to be shown very little courtesy by the natives once they learn your trade.

On the other hand, mobs, Tepestani inquisitors, hags and a number of other NPC/monsters will show great interest in getting to you .. up close and personal :fight!:

So, if I were you, I would invest early on in things that would allow me to change what I look like rapidly (Disguise Self and the like) because - let's face it - your life will most likely depend on it.

Invest ranks in the Bluff and Diplomacy skills too. Can't hurt.
