We had a group that meet twice a week at the library across the street from school. After several weeks we started meeting at each others house on the weekends. We all started with the old basic D&D Red Box set. This made it very easy for a bunch of 6th graders. After time we advanced into the expert set and eventually we got into AD&D. These were some of the best days of my life. Now my son, who is eleven would like to start playing. But after seeing the 'new' manuals, he became very discouraged. I am still of a sound mind that everyone would be best off starting with the 'basic' set. But of course this is a thing of the past. But I was able to find an old set for sale on Amazon. Is there any talk of ever revamping those old sets? And where can I find the old modules? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : sandskimmer Date : 09-02-03 11:30 PM Try ebay. Also, alot of game/hobby stores sell used gaming stuff. They may have some copies lying around for cheap. I agree that the core rules, while simplified from 2ed, are a little much for someone of that age. An "Introductory" set of rules like the old basic set would be a good idea. I don't think it will ever happen, though. There's a reason they got rid of the "Advanced" in D&D. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Algolei Date : 09-03-03 05:06 AM Yes, check local hobby and gaming stores. When 3rd edition came out, stores that wouldn't even look at original boxed sets suddenly found an unexpected market. Stores have been selling out-of-print material ever since. It's great! :D -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : Shoegaze99 Date : 09-03-03 08:47 AM Originally posted by sandskimmer An "Introductory" set of rules like the old basic set would be a good idea. The Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition Adventure Game has been out for some time and is exactly what you don't think will ever be released - an introductory set of rules. It's essentially d20 basic and remains widely available on the Net and in some shops. My local bookstore carries them. I've read and used the set, and can safely say they would do well to introduce younger players to D&D and role playing game mechanics. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : RedScorpion Date : 09-03-03 09:26 AM The Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition Adventure Game has been out for some time and is exactly what you don't think will ever be released - an introductory set of rules. Is it similar to the original set? Sort of. It's a stripped down version of the d20 D&D rules; not as different as OD&D was to AD&D, but just as streamlined. The set came with dice, pre-rolled characters, some basic d20 rules, some maps and a series of brief adventures. Like the red box, the Adventure Game set only takes you to level 3, after which you'll need to map up further level advancement or move on to the Player's Handbook. (Unlike OD&D, it's not a truly separate set of rules). It seems to run about $10 just about everywhere I look online. I can see that Barnes & Noble has it (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?pwb=1&ean=9780786916412), and it looks to be $10 here (http://www.gamersattic.com/roleplaying/dnd/dnd_adgame.htm). The customer comments one this website (http://dungeons-and-dragons.cebru.com/books/P000gkejfeaigi/Dungeons_Dragons_Adventure_Game_The_Adventure_Begins_Now_Everything_You_Need_to_Play_Dungeons_Dragons_Ser/) should give you an indication of what this is ... they compare it directly to the old Basic rules. And this review (http://www.gamers.com/game/322580) might be helpful, too. I used this set to introduce my longtime players to 3e after playing OD&D, 1e and 2e for many, many years. probably great for kids, too. Enjoy. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Lost_and_Damned Date : 09-03-03 09:57 AM for a picture of what the set looks like, see the TSR archive site (http://www.flash.net/~brenfrow/3e/box2.htm) strangely there's two versions of this set, but no difference in contents that i know of..... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : WSmith Date : 09-04-03 09:42 AM Originally posted by Lost_and_Damned for a picture of what the set looks like, see the TSR archive site (http://www.flash.net/~brenfrow/3e/box2.htm) strangely there's two versions of this set, but no difference in contents that i know of..... The only difference was the size of box. The smaller one was to be marketed for hobby stores, (same size box as all previous D&D box sets) and the bigger one, which is almost the size of a boardgame box, for other outlets like toys stores. There is one main biggie problem with this set. It has no rules for character creation. This is why I would just reccomend either of the Basic D&D rulebooks for any newbie. They can be found pretty cheap nowadays on ebay. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Elendur Date : 09-04-03 11:08 AM I think the 3e adventure box is great, and a great deal for 10 bucks. You get a pared down version of the rules, about 8 pregen iconic characters, 6 adventures, a big poster map, lots of tokens to use for miniatures and dungeon dressing, and a set of dice. After playing with this for a while he should have no trouble picking up the PHB. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Lost_and_Damned Date : 09-04-03 06:15 PM Originally posted by WSmith The only difference was the size of box.
