Ok, I don't get it, as this hardcover book is available for order from Amazon.com (and .ca).

How is that possible? I thought it was never released?!?

Does anyone know anything about this, or even tried to order it?

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0786906677/104-3460839-2579159?v=glance&s=books

I see it and I have no idea. I can't find any information on the ISBN number, and there is no picture, so this is probably a mistake of some sort. If someone orders this, let me know what you get!

Weird.

ISBN: 0786906677
Released 1997.

Interesting. Maybe it's a dev who took a copy with him? No idea, dudemar, but I'd be cautious about buying it.

Here's a bit more. Listed as "no information available," so I'm a bit dubious of its authenticity.

Only one way to find out I guess. I'm really tempted!:D

My guess is they probably won't find it after 3-5 weeks and tell you they cancelled your order, and then maybe they'll update their listings.

Amazon has been pretty notorious over the years of keeping an ear to the ground about upcomming releases, then keeping a placeholder on their site for when they actually aquire the shipment. On more occassions than I can recall hearing, they've had placeholders for books that never got past the 'talk' stage, sequals to books that were never written, and other similar occurances. Likely, someone at Amazon heard something about SotDL, and then they're nice little webmonkey put up a placeholder for it, never bothing to take it down yet (no way to tell when the placeholder was put up). I think that after 7 or so years, someone out there would have heard of the book having been released (its not as if half of us aren't DS junkies). There's simply no way that the book was released, so everyone can simply stem their curiosity. Its not listed in any of the order catalogues from TSR for years 96-98 (giving a year's worth of leeway to Amazon).

Here's another oddity if you look in the books and stuff by TSR...anyone else know about this one?

Time of the Champions

Is this (or would it have been) about Rajaat's Champions? Hmmm...

I'd have to say no on that one.

More than likely just a random book that did not see the light of day.

I think you're right on that one, Sysane, the more I think about the title, the more it sounds like a Dragonlance book or something...although a series of novels about the Cleansing Wars would have totally ruled...

We got a reply from amazon.com, but it didn't shed any more light on the situation. We'll probably try to order this title and see what arrives/doesn't arrive in the mail.

For those interested, I sent this email to amazon.ca:
I'm inquiring for more information on the book "Secrets of
the Dead Lands" by TSR Inc, which is listed as having the ISBN
0786906677.

As far as I know, no book titled "Secrets of the Dead Lands" was ever
released by TSR.

It was scheduled for release in 1997, but was never published.

Is there any extra information available for this book?

Thank you

And got this amazing reply :
Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.ca.

Please note that the only information we can give you about
particular titles is what we display on the product information page:
the title, author, artist, or actor/director, publisher, release
date, and price. Sometimes we have a short synopsis, review, and
cover image.

We know that, often, the amount of information we have may make it
difficult to make a purchasing decision unless you already know
something about the item. Our editorial staff is working to improve
the information we provide about each item.

If you decide to order the item from our site and find that, upon
delivery, the item's packaging indicates that it is not the item you
expected or is contrary to the information listed on our site, you
may return it for a full refund; just be sure that the item is not
opened.

You'll find our returns policy, instructions, and a printable return
mailing label online at:

http://www.amazon.ca/returns

Thanks again for shopping at Amazon.ca.

As you can see, this was a very helpful reply. :D

Perhaps a return email that states:

Jackarse - the problem is that the book does not exist, not that there is a lack of information on it. You're stupid.

Maybe I need to get out of the service industry?

Considering the book was never released by TSR, my guess is your money probably went towards some Amazon.com employee's vacation fund :P. You will probably never get the backorder.

Sheesh. . .
"We got an email asking for information in a book! What do we do?"

"Oh, send them the form lettter"

"But, sir, the form letter doesn't really answer the question asked. It says something about the book never being released"

"What?"

"Yeah, it says tha-"

"You mean you actually READ the letter?!?! Don't you know, we just send out the form letters, their emails then get forwarded to the WDCSWADE department"

"What WDS... huh?"

"Yeah, We Don't Care So We Auto Delete Everything department"

Heh heh.. Sorry. I have been on the receiving end of so many stupid form letters it's not funny

You could tell them that they are all stupid morons who don't deserve to see the light of day because they screw up everything they touch and so forth, and you get back a happy, enthusiatic letter thanking you for your time and stating how they appreciate your views and support... yet nothing changes.

Gotta love it.
