What of Kara - Tur and the Otherlands?

*Maybe silly question*

I got my greedy little on a map of oerth (by simply googling up and down, you understand), on which some other continents and subcontinents were named.

One of them was callled Kara - Tur.
My question is now: There was a similar module for the Forgotten Realms Setting (The Horde - you can download it here at wizards') describing an eastern - mongolian setting?

Is the Kara - Tur of Oerth similar to Kara - Thur of Toril? (Fellin' a bit like spelljammin') Did they simply import the setting - I think it was never really popular - from one world to the other?

And what about new stuff to other (semi) official parts of Oerth like for example Aquaria?

Thanx

At the beginning, Kara-Tur was supposed to be set on Oerth.

Then FR came along. As that setting got bigger and bigger, they kept adding to it and it was decided to relocate the world of Oriental Adventures (the one from 1E) there for .. ah .. business reasons.

Read this and you'll learn what you need from the creator of Aquaria, Frank Mentzer.

Thank you very much! :D :D :D :D

I had wondered about it quite a while...

You know, as my 'default' setting for WoG is the Aerdy Kingdom (I chose it because the sourcebook is freely available for my players, too, and so I didn't have to introduce my setting all by myself), I am unlikely to use the oriental regions. But this information can serve for including some gimmicks like a nomad embassy (in Rauxes, 584CY, hehe) or a special character.

Talking about Aquaria, I get that impression as if it was a bit like that Watermere stuff from DL - don't yet know if that's right... will browse the links... :D

Were there maybe any other settings that *switched* between the universes?

By the way, as I am going for vacation for two weeks, thank you very much!
You answered to almost any of my questions on this forum and provided me with many informations that help me getting along with WoG better!

May I ask a personal question?
-How is it that you know so much about GH and AD&D? I am not an unexpirienced DM and know some about AD&D development, but you literally seem to know everything!

Thanks again

Dave Arneson started running his Blackmoor campaign in 1969 or 1970. He was using a combination of rules from other games and some new ones. Chainmail was one of the games he mined for rules so he invited Gary Gygax and a few others from Lake Geneva to come up and check out the new game. Gygax created his first PC, the fighter Yrag, and adventured in Blackmoor. He then went home and begin writing the original D&D rules, and started his own Greyhawk campaign with some Blackmoor references thrown in as a homage to Dave and his Blackmoor campaign.

Gygax and Arneson were partners at first, and the first two supplements for the original D&D games were called Greyhawk and Blackmoor. Then Dave and TSR/Gary had a falling out. Dave then released Blackmoor as the First Fantasy Campaign in the late 70s, and the Greyhawk folio was released in 81.

Then later in the 80s Dave brought Blackmoor back to TSR. Instead of starting a new campaign world line, Blackmoor was placed in Mystara. Since it didn't mesh with the setting as is, the story about it being thousands of years in the past was created.

Now Dave is re-releasing Blackmoor on his own with no connection to any TSR/WotC world.

As for the Isle of Dread, it's a piece of legend. It was module X1, the first of the "Expert series" for the bD&D (basic D&D) system. Also located in the Known World (aka Mystara during 2E), it was relocated recently to Greyhawk in Dungeon #114.

Pleasure to be of help. I dare say I wasn't the only one to give it a try though ;)

Well .. I have 20 odd years of rpg and D&D under my belt. AD&D 1E was my first game and GH the first setting I used, so I think it's natural for me to know a wee bit about both.

That said, I often rely on the work of many other (much more) dedicated fans to answer quickly most questions. It's a simple matter of having saved the info on my hard drive or of knowing where to look. I can't say how many times Jason Zavoda's index, or Grodog's website (or a dozen other treasure hoards of hawkness like CF) saved me hours of work! If anything, I feel indebted to the good folks who put so much work free of charge just to help other GH fans.

Thanks for that info!

Blackmoor to younger players is a myth: *the first real fantasy setting* I think.

I heard first on a Ravenloft meeting of the Isle of Dreads, and as with any Ravenloft stuff, I always assumed it to travel between the planes and multiverses.

Of both, I think, sooner or later, as DM or even as a player, I will travel to Blackmoor some day...

---------------------------------------------------
It's good to know that there are some rpg veterans out there that didn't give it up and called it *childish*.

I got linked to the AD&D lore by Dragonlance and then participated in a bunch of groups that never worked until I decided to become DM myself.
I use GH as a default setting for random adventures, but want to switch to more module - based campaigns.
I am very grateful for any information you give me to extend my knowledge until I have a GH library for myself that is worth of the name! Thank you!

*I am out for Spain for about three weeks. Have a good time!*
