Just re-reading Thri-Kreen of Athas last night... and in the parts on racial memories it talks about Thri-Kreen hell being a "cold" plane, which is actually a vision of a real place (a cold layer (7th?) of hell - i'll check / reference when i'm at home - involving planar creatures.

Hmm... it's this little sprinklings that make me wonder.... about why Athas was / is attractive to extra-planar creatures... and why such an effort was made to seal it....

Where did you ever read in any official book that something/someone/group of what ever, once made an effort to seal Athas from the astral?? As far as I ever read, it has always been part of the athasian cosmos since .... the begining??!! I'll admit it would be a nice add if the '' sealing'' weren't natural though.

Nah mate, not saying i read anything official about an effort to seal Athas, just saying it makes me *think* that someone made that effort. The offical part was refering to the bit in the thri-kreen of athas, where it talks about thier perception of hell derived from racial memory.

Hope that clarifys

The link is thus:

The kreen word, kano, which translates to 'seeks heat; cold' is similar to the name Cania, the icy seventh layer of baator (okay, some people think its similar). There's also the Kano Swamp in the Crimson Savana, which may be a cold swampland region. The swamp was added in later on, after TKoA was written, so its anybodies guess as to whether or not its an innitial reference to Cania, or a hint at what was to come in the revised box set. Speculations abound as usual. Go with whichever direction suits your game as usual. Personally, I like made the Kano Swamp a slightly frigid wetland from some kind of unknown (read: as of yet developed) phenomenon. Kreen don't do very well in the cold and wet climate, suffering all kinds of ailments and are garuanteed a slow and painful end should they stay too long. The Empire uses the swamps as a region of exile and the borders of the swamp are patrolled regularly. Anyone may enter freely, but no one is alowed to return on pain of death (some of the swamp's afflictions are contageous). I dropped some gulogon style mutant kreen in there (same stats and description, different fluff, PCs never made the connection ;)) that are diseased and insane.

No need for that. Travel may be unlikely, but in this awful long time the Thri-Kreen exist as intelligent beings I would guess that some of them made it to the planes and back.
Second, as seen in the real world, you do not need to go the planes to imagine their outlook.
The worst thing for Thri-Kreen is cold, therefore their hell is cold. The existence of a place that matches this description could also be a coincidence.

Although I haven't read the book, so my oppiniion isen't realy valid, my mind percieves the term 'a cold plane' as a state in wich one is cut off from the racial memory and ones pack, effectivley creating a mental alloneness or 'cold' (aka; death), albiet more of a psichological/spiritual cold than a physical one.
