2 of the part members in my groupgot turned to stone by the cockatrices in the Library. My character, the kender, was carrying the music box when he was changed to stone.

A Silvanesti in the group aquired a bottled (and imprisoned) Efreeti awhile back and has been holding onto it, not using any of the wishes inside and not voluntarily freeing it. That player was there last so we stopped becvause that's the only way he could conceivablty be freed and we didn't want to make the decision for him (even though it really is the only one to make at this stage).

So my question to other DMs out there is: how are you going to get characters unpetrified when they were carrying items that are required to complete the adventure?

Hmm, maybe if the needed item was in the player's hands at the time, the item slips from their grasp as they turn to stone, sort of like dropping something when your shocked or startled. The fright of the moment makes sense here, since they are being turned to stone after seeing a particularly horrendous critter in the cockatrice.

If the item is in storage, like say a backpack, or bag, then I would say the item in question has an automatic saving throw (with special DM modifier so it WON'T fail no matter what). So even if the player carrying the said item turns to stone, then the item remains as is, either encased in a stone bag/backpack (relatively cheap item that if it breaks, who really cares anyway?) or it's special saving throw carries over to the bag it's stored in as well.

Just some suggestions

I disagree: I think that instead this is a very good situation, now the others PG have to find a way to get the music box, i think that they know that it is important!
So there will be little adventures to save the stoned pg and the key...
Good work! Enjoy this little deviance from the story!

Is the character's clothing and equipment turned to stone, or just his/her flesh? I don't see why anything other than flesh would be turned to stone, so simply pull the box out of whatever the character had it in

I think you should be careful what characters face and what not in adventure (depends really very much on group type/strenght/magic they possess). Personnally I don't think I will use Cockatrices. Just too dangerous and not really important for story.

BUT that's just simple way out. If they are used I could imagine that maybe couple characters are petrifyed in group. So, IF I use them there must be some cure also available. Then some kender (or the gully dwarves) will know some magical cure, but that requires maybe little adventure (AND also getting those stone bodies out - well, maybe cockatrices will be somewhere then). This adventure should probably not be anything hard.

Library and cockatrices are just one NOT-IMPORTANT encounter in campaign, but it can easily turn very difficult obstacle if played wrong.

Only if there is
a) a spellcaster in the group that might have some type of resources that would enable them to cast stone to flesh, or knows of some magic device in the area that could cure the PCs of the situation. Thing is, Malys would have most likley grabbed that for herself long ago, not to mention the turmoil the area has been through, so the resting place of said item could be destroyed. Also, is the spellcaster of the group a high enough level to cast stone to flesh?

b) the players could go to the hags and barter with them for some help

Otherwise, when a person turns to stone, my impression was always that they, and everything they carried was turned to stone. Clothes, bags, non magical weapons, etc. Hence the suggestion of a special DM modifier for saving throws or possibly the character dropping said item.

When in doubt, go with a scroll.
