A while ago while I attempted (w/ no success whatsoever) to discover the cause behind the seemingly pointless shake up of the planes in 3e. Failing that I've decided to create one. Anyone wanna help?

You can use Die, Vecna, Die and The Apocalypse Stone to explain them if you like. In DVD, Vecna forced his way into Sigil, thus causing cosmic disruption. In TAS, the artifact stone was removed, closing all planar connections, awakening the Tarrasque, messed up Moloch's plans, etc.

For years it has been growing more difficult for Spelljammer ships to travel the distance to other crystal spheres. Careful measurement has led to the discovery that the multiverse is expanding and all the crystal spheres are moving away from each. More recent measurements have shown that the speed at which they are expanding is itself accelerating. The crystal spheres have been moving away from each other at a faster and faster pace.

Arcanologists are unclear as to why. Some theorize that the nature of phlogiston has become unstable. Others theorize that an outside force is acting on the Spheres to drive them apart.

The result is that the cosmologies and infrastructures of belief are being ripped asunder. In order for gods and divine realms to stay connected to their believers they have had to invest ever increasing amounts of divine energy to maintain the links with their believer worlds. This has entailed the loss of connections with worlds that do not support a belief in those gods. Some gods have had to fracture themselves into multiple aspects each drifting off with a separate world to support their congregations.

The very Wheel itself is being ripped appart. Some cosmologies have lost all connections whatsoever with the primary cosmology. Realmspace, the Crystal Sphere of Toril, was lost altogether in the aftermath of a catastrophic phlogiston conflagration some 4 years ago.

There is hope, planeswalkers have discovered that travel between the spheres can still be accomplished quite easily through the use of the Shadow Plane. Something about the nature of Shadow seems to be unaffected by the expansion of the multiverse...

Krynnspace, the crystal sphere of Krynn, has been moving away for so long that their connection to the planes has almost been lost, and their records have garbled, currently giving a plane called the Abyss a description that matches with Avernus, the first layer of Baator...

A recently discovered sphere, the Eberron Cluster, was lost almost immediately; the fragmentation appears to be related to a realm of madness reachable previously only through the ether gaps and a dream realm resembling the border ethereal connecting to the plane...

A backwater sphere called Terraspace has become slightly unhinged; their memory of other spheres and of the planes exists only as a game based mostly on paper, dice, and imagination...

...or it could be just because the people who re-wrote the planes for 3E are a bunch of mindless sodding leatherheaded clueless berks, but then who am I to judge? (I mean Formians? Why Formiansfor Primus' sake? What was wrong with modrons?)
