"Blood Wars" the card game

At my local comic book shop among their discount items was two full boxes of Blood Wars cards from the general set and the expansion pack "Factols and Factions" marked for $0.30 a pack. With a little bargaining my brother and I got the whole lot for $7.

After opening the packs, it's pretty easy to see why the game failed. For instance, in Magic, the creature cards have skills are intuitive - flying, first strike, flanking, and the like all make some degree of sense. But, in Blood Wars, the skills are vague. For example, the Planetar's skill is something like this: "Vorpal ability: send one legion of CS of 6 or less to the discard pile."

The cards themselves are not attractive at all. The borders have that Planescape stucco look, but it just doesn't look right on those little cards. The art is all lifted directly from the Planescape sourcebooks. Sure, it's mostly from DiT, but, again, it doesn't look good on the cards.

It's sad that the game was so haphazardly put together. If done right, the setting was certainly rich enough in character to give Magic a little competition.

I suppose the best card I got in my packs was Factol Erin Montgomery... I guess.

Not sure why I am ranting about a game that failed so many years ago... but I felt the topic was interesting. Anyone else ever buy or play "Blood Wars"?

Bought a few boxes cheap, very cheap, just to collect them, but I've never actually played the game.
