I just started reading Dark Thane and it stated that the Hylar and Daewar cannot see in the dark compared to the Theiwar and Daegar. This doesn't match up with the DLCS which has the Dwarves having the same ablilities as found in the PHB. Is this a case of the writer not knowing the game mechanics or is this taking into effect that Dark Dwarf having 120 feet of Darkvision?

Actually it is WotC's insistence that standard mountain dwarves have Darkvision. The author is following prior novels where authors were trying to come up with a pseudo scientific explanation for why Dwarves can see so well in the dark.

Personally, I'd rather keep the darkvision for dwarves thing. Elves can see under starlight, dwarves can see underground. Infravision is dead, and thank God for that.

Odd, I remember the DLCS listing "Elvensight" as including Darkvision _and_ low-light vision.

Yeah, that was a misguided attempt in order to mimic a display of infravision in Chronicles, where Tanis spotted Tas' heat signature.

It is a silly rule though. After all, Darkvision doesn't create the same effects as infrared vision. As well, torchlight has a 30 foot radius, so unless you don't have a human in your party (very unlikely, especially since gamers love humans since 3e) it is effectively useless.

Good point ... except for the fact that torchlight has a 20 foot radius of bright illumination.

And not every elf has a human with a torch glued to him.

Elvensight has proven very useful so far in my campaign, on the occasions that an elf character has been in darkness. Since both characters that fit the description were scout-types, they really had no need to bother with torches.

Cheers,
