How would an Online D&D game work? I can see problems(Die rolling, for a start.) Would it be that the DM rolls the dice? I can see stats working as a Point Buy system, but how would combat go? These are my questions, hope someone can answer them.

well, there are online dicebots and lots of programs available to aid the process. You can also have them roll stats in front of you in a chat with that program.

Yeah, basically, dicebots will take care of everything, as long as you're playing in a chatroom environment. dunno how pbp or pbem works.

There are a few ways to do online gaming.

In a chatroom game, there are "dice bots" to take care of the die rolling.

IN Play by email (PBEM), the GM probably does it. In this format you need to trust your GM - a GM out to kill his players is going to run a lousy PBEM. PBEM necessarily needs to be a bit less combat-focused. When it does occur, Excel spreadsheets make excellent email-able battlemats. Each player looks at the battlemat, decides on a general course of action, and emails his plans to the GM, who then plays out two or three rounds of combat at a time. If each player defines every little detail of their every action in combat, fights can take weeks. I'd highly recommend using a free email list manager, like Yahoo Groups or something like it. It maintains an email list plus a central location to store character sheets, maps, and other images.

I've played in several very succcessful play by email games.

Here is the link:

That is the one they use right here on the WizO boards. If you hop on over to the Wizards community boards they play online all the time. Let me know if you need the link.

www.roleplayinggames.net

There are message boards there, online die rollers, character sheets, everything a DM would need to run a campaign is right there waiting for you.
