Excitement in the desert

As you should know, I'm running the KoD campaign. We are currently making our trek through the Desolation (mostly using Endure Elements as to utilize the daytime hours). My question is this: How do you make this exciting? Or at the very least, interesting. The last adventure basically boiled down to this: "You walk some. Then you see a __________. Roll initiative."

When walking through the desert to Hurim, I was able to make it more exciting by combining the Draconian and Giant Eagle encounters into a mini-adventure. I'm unsure what to do here.

Thank you very much.

Miles.

My campaign is just about to get to this point as well, and *would* have gotten there today if I hadn't misplaced my map marker. We had to end far too early...in fact, because one of my characters decided to wait in Hope's End while the rest ran, he got knocked out by Dark Knights and placed in jail. When the rest decided to go to rescue him at night, we realized we had no way of carrying out any combat scenes. Stupid me.

Anyways, /endrant. Here's what I plan on doing during the Desolation timeframe.

One early evening, as the party is waking up, they notice that Elijayess is missing. I'm going to use the Slig Scouts encounter and build on it, making it so that they actually overpowered the Kagonesti and took him back to their lair. Queue the dungeon crawl, which is something that KoD is lacking for the most part. :D

After they traipse throughout the dungeon, I'll make it so that Elijayess has been taken to the Peak by some Sligs to sacrafice to the Dread Dragon's Spirit, which is their new deity. The heroes get to chase them all the way to the peak, and I'll be adding Sligs to the final battle..mostly because I know my players are too strong for just one Dragonspawn.

Isn't it strange how things work out? I just checked in the Bestiary, and the Sligs worshipped Malystryx as a deity anyway. What are the odds...

There are a lot of creatures in the Dark Sun campaign setting that you could possibly use in the desert. I know that there were some creatures that build extensive underground lairs if you are interested in providing a sidetrek adventure. That would be my suggestion.
