The Campaign Begins

I am about to start a dark sun campaign (my third as DM, never a player, sigh...) for three guys who are newish to role-playing (but all versed in fantasy). They are forbidden from looking at this message board, or any dark sun related web spaces (for spoiler reasons), so I can speak pretty much freely.

The campaign starts in Eldaarich as Daskinor's madness is in full swing but before the city gets locked down. Keltis is yet to be converted, let alone start his second transformation, and the rest of the world is pretty much as stated in the original Boxed Set. The only change I am making is the abolition of Common.

Since there was nothing much ever said about Eldaarich, I am just going to cop out and make them another Aztec culture (Eldaari/Drajan is a single tongue), but much more secular than Draj. The native weapons will be the macuahuitl (obsidian edged wooden sword, treated as an inferior longsword) and atlatl.

The PCs will be a Templar, a Psychic Warrior and Gladiator, using Noonan's rules for athasian humans but athas.org for everything else. They will start at first level, and I am not going to use alignments. They will be noble brothers, with the hereditary duty of serving at the arena, but sent on a mission (to get them out of the city) around 3rd or 4th level.

The published adventures I plan to be using are Road to Urik, Black Spine (from which they return to Free Year -1, Tempug's Band a distant memory…), Freedom (adjusted for levels), Forest Maker, and Dragon’s Crown, the campaign headed towards a climactic battle with Abalach-Re. Throughout this, they are to learn the truth of the champions and the Cleansing Wars.

They will have to explore Waverly and search for an orcish temple to retrieve artefacts (one for each PC, including the sword from Forest Maker) to defeat their enemy.

Will we get to see the Epic rules before I get to Road to Urik? It is more likely that the Dragon takes up druidry, but who knows.

You should take a look at Wisdom of the Drylanders available at athas.org. The Wisdom of Terror part explains a bit of what goes on in Eldaarich. It should give you some ideas of how to run things there.

How can you run Road to Urik before Freedom. That scenario is about Urik invading Tyr after the death of Kalak. Hamanu will never attack Tyr if Kalak is still in power.

It's not bad; i like the idea of the cages of undead prisoners, and the red candle thing is a great concept (3 ceramic bits, the daily wage of a trained hireling, buys 30 candles, so even if one lasts all day it's a major expense).

The heartbeat drums are nice and creepy, too.

Good point. I meant Black Flames (Where they meet Abalach-Re for the first time).

You could always alter Road to Urik so that its Eldaarich attacking Kurn or visa versa (you stated that Keltis will not have reformed yet in your game).

Just a suggestion. :D
