What are the details of the creation of the Obisidian man of Urik. I lost my book of Artifacts, and can only find the converted stats for him online, but no details to the background of the artifact.

Doesn't really explain where the obsidian man comes from. Hamanu managed to gain control over it in a titanic battle after his templars brought it to the city (the found it in the obsidian mines). Later one of his templars tried to use it, freeing it, and it escaped into the wastes.

Ideas as to what it is . . . could be from the deadlands. kinda flimsy idea though. another possibility is that it's an entity from the plane of magma and there's a connection to the elemental war of athas.

Sorry Cap'n Nick but I seriously think the Obsidian Man is an obsidian statue, animated into an artifact.
Lots of people like the Man cause he gave it to Hamanu...
But looking at it closely I find I thoroughly dislike that artifact: its power is ridiculously high for something that didn't came from Rajaat (probably not from the elements either cause its a statue, not some kind of elemental), a Champion was nearly killed by it (what?) and it left no trace in history.
Rajaat really should have researched Obsidian Man creation instead of Champion creation, kicked more ass... [/rant]

I hope that when athas.org redo the athasian artifacts they find some way of remaking him in some plausible fashion.

Oh and hi limeyninja

The flavor text says it was found by Urikites in the smoking crown while digging up obsidian, right? Then they plopped it on a sled and dragged it back to Urik, but each night someone was killed, because the man would move around, murder, then return to the mat.

Can't really say it's "just" an animated statue, especially since it was found in what was essentially lava fow at some point. Also, it's described as wearing clothing of Urikite fashion (well, "wearing"). I think the most plausible history for it is that it's related to the elemental war and the para-plane of magma. Like you said, it's ridiculously powerful. The elemental planes are possible sources for such power. I'd really hold to the idea that it comes from Magma, like say a urikite magma priest made a pact with a crazy paraelemental from magma, they bonded and the Man is the result. Granted it IS an artifact . . . but so is the Green Rhul, strictly speaking.

I admit I kinda would like to see more of the elemental war and its effects on Athas.

I'm running a campaign about the obsidian man. My idea is that he actually was created by Rajaat and was kind of back-up plan to destroy the rest of the surving races of the cleansing wars and the Champions.
There also more than one obsidian man, but well hidden and not found yet.
The last orders from Rajaat to them was to hide until further instructions. After the one was found by Hamanu he started to look for a new hiding-place and now he hides in the Silt Sea ....

Thats a pretty decent idea. I'd like to see it further developed.

I had it in my campaign that Azuteck had control of the O-Man thru the circlet. I figured his city state of Draj needed some force to proctect it from the other SK's. I mean seriously, what else is there to stop them from sacking the SK-less city state?

What's wrong with my version?

Other than it needs to be upgraded to 3.5/XPH, heh.

It could be some sort of para-elemental cleric advanced being whose transformation spell when wrong. That would explain why it has the power to take on a dragon.

(Off topic) Hey Nyt. Hows it going?

Perhaps it's the corpse of one of the old Champions, who in a last ditch effort to save his bacon, bonded with the obsidian as he was tossed into a crater of molten rock. It's taken this long to get back to the surface and is still trying to get his bearings and sanity back. My 2 cents.

Interesting view you have. But rather than completely comment on it, I'll just leave it as that.

Kael - one of my roommates was over in Iraq for 550 days, and my little brother was there for 90 days. Knowing how this usually works out, more than likely, Iraq will eventually become a permanent duty station - despite the statements to the contrary.

Amen brother.

I salute all the troops for having to put up with this BS though.

I would also like to invite anyone to show me how this isn't otherwise over IM or email, cause I wil gladly make you see the light. ;)

Actually email is better.

Even evil acts can have good consequences. I guess we'll know in 5 years or so...

Except that the act never had to happen at this point and conjuncture and now we can't deal with the more important things going on right now thanks to it.

Okay guys, I just want to remind you that this isn't a political arena and many people on these boards may have different opinions about the matter... so let's try to keep things on Athas' surface before it gets into a heated argument, please.
