This issue presents the first of four eight-panel poster maps of the World of Greyhawk, one of D&D's most beloved campaign settings. This first quadrant unveils (among others) the location of the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, the expanse of the Land of Black Ice, much of the demon-haunted lands of Iuz, and the expansive Vesve Forest, the location featured in this month's adventure, "Throne of Iuz."

Box of Flumph
by Tim Hitchcock
It had to happen. Of all the creatures in the history of Dungeons & Dragons, the lowly flumph has perhaps the worst reputation. Can Tim Hitchcock and the Dungeon staff revive this lovable loser in a way that won't fill Prison Mail with hate mail? Drop by and see! A D&D adventure for 1st-level characters.

Shadow of the Abyss
by Greg A. Vaughan
On the trail of Ilkharis, frost giant cleric of Kostchtchie and pawn of the Malgoth, the PCs venture out of Istivin to a mountain border fort inhabited by giants and a nasty blue dragon. Part Two of the Istivin: City of Shadows campaign arc. A D&D adventure for 11th-level characters.

Throne of Iuz by John Simcoe
At the heart of the Vesve Forest lies the warped, twisted region of deadly bogs, acidic gasses, and treacherous terrain known as the Defiled Glades. And from these glades comes King Bog One-eye, a titanic toad gifted with an appetite for destruction and the intelligence to carry it out by none other than Iuz himself, one of the greatest villains from the World of Greyhawk. A D&D adventure for 14th-level characters.

It will be an awesome issue if only for the Greyhawk map alone. Even though I have a subscription, I am going to buy up a few copies of this issue in the stores, too.

If Erik's intention was to sell more magazines, then I have to say he will hit multiple homers over the next four issues. In addition to my subscription, I will be getting an extra copy of each of the next four to store away in the 'vault.'

Can't wait; that map's gonna be HUGE, baby.

One thing I really liked about Greyhawk (and Mystara) was the use and prevalence of the hex-grid map. I know the modern style is a "hexless" map field - I've seen it in the LGG and other newer Greyhawk stuff - but to me, the utility of a hex-grid map makes up for its rather clunky appearance. When your PCs are 47 miles northwest of Hexpools, what you really need to know is what the immediate environment's like, and any REALLY important features. Art depicting the grasslands, stony hills or whatever is pretty, but much less functional from a DM standpoint. (Also, if you jot down that the Secret Whatever is located/buried/eating people in Hex #B2/103, you can keep campaign location notes without uglifying your map - so to speak.)

Mm-mm. Yes indeedy. Of course, if I were a PLAYER, I'd vastly prefer a forced-perspective lineless map (like the maps we traditionally see of Middle-Earth), because they're so darn pretty.

D'oh.

For the ease of travelling over land, the hex grid is extremely useful in my games. Matter of fact that is one reason I still use the DARLENE map over the LGJ map to this day in my campaigns. From what I understand there will be a hex on the new GH Dungeon maps, but I beielve E Mona said that the lines of the hexes would be muted and transparent so not to interfere with the icons and artwork on the actual maps. The small previews from the past 2 Dungeon mags clearly show hex lines, but even at that small preview it doesn't appear that the lines will interfere with the map itself.

I like the hexes as a DM but the non-hexes as a player, that I do.

I also liked the old Ravenloft maps without hexes but with the transparent hex overlay.
