Magic Item size

I'm curious about the sizes of magic items... If you have a magic ring, it is assumed to fit the wearer regardless of his size (Small, Medium, Large, etc.) But what about magic weapons and armour, which have different sizes to begin with? Say your group kills an Ogre wielding a +1 Greataxe, could a halfling use the axe or would it stay a Large weapon?

The default is for Medium sized weapons and armor. If it's specifically designed for another size, it should say so. Of course, if the bearer of the weapon is another size, it's safe to say the weapon is sized appropriately.

I believe that officially, most items do not size to fit. The exceptions are rings and boots and the like. Armor and weapons do not change size to fit the wielder. Not I believe that Complete Arcane may have made a change to this rule, I don't have mine on me to verify that. But of course, you can House Rule it to adjust as needed. In my games we house rule that Armor can change one size, up or down from it's original size. Weapons are not able to change. All other items change as needed.

Of course, if a medium or smaller sized character wants to wield a weapon from a larger size category, they could conceivably use the weapon, and not take the requisite penalty if they have a specific feat called something like monkey grip or something like that. It was either in the Druid/Ranger/Barbarian book or the fighter/monk book, I can't remember which off hand.
You still have a problem with oversized armor though. :P

Actually officially armor DOES size to fit. This is copied from the SRD but you can find it on page 213 of the 3.5 DMG

SIZE AND MAGIC ITEMS
When an article of magic clothing or jewelry is discovered, most of the time size shouldn’t be an issue. Many magic garments are made to be easily adjustable, or they adjust themselves magically to the wearer. Size should not keep characters of various kinds from using magic items.
There may be rare exceptions, especially with racial specific items.
Armor and Weapon Sizes: Armor and weapons that are found at random have a 30% chance of being Small (01–30), a 60% chance of being Medium (31–90), and a 10% chance of being any other size (91–100).

So if the armor is medium size than it'll adjust itself to any medium character be they 7 feet tall or 5 feet tall... it's magic.

Actually, it does not say that Armor re-sizes. It says that clothing and such would. If armor resized, then why does it matter what size it is when found??

err... the out-of-date 3.0 ruling is that magic armor resizes to fit anything Within it's age catagory. Not sure if they changed that for 3.5.

Within its age category?

You mean size category?

Or is this a special thing for dragons?

PS: Pick up 3.5, Thrune. You know you want to.

Personally when I DM nothing resizes. It is funny when the party finds a ring sized for a halflings hand and they have to wear on a pinky finger in order to use it. Or finding a ring for a giant and having to wear it as a thumb ring. Most of the time when the party finds a magic item they cannot use do to size then they trade it away for money or other magic items.

Granted, I do not pit them up against too many opponents with unsual size magic items. (That dragon with a ring, that would be a choker on medium sized characters.)

I usually play it that even mundane armour or weapons of one size type can be worn by any character of that size (for example, a minotaur and dwarf could exchange armour, since both are Medium). It's simpler that way, I find.
