They have translated the runes and now know they have to forge a sword and a shield to slay an undead giant leader. The undead giant is the "Dodforer" from Cairnheim and a rather nasty opponent. They will have no chance against him, if they dont forge these items. My idea is that the shield shall have the powers to protect the player(s) from necromantic sphere and undead powers such as draining effect and fear. The sword shall be used as a 1 time object, and is to be struck into the phylactery of the Dodforer. Here it shall be able to destroy him forever with no chance to ever return to the prime material plane. (Unless an evil scheme comes to my mind and he finds a way to return :evillaugh: ) Is there any objects printed to do this already? or shall the players come up with a recipe for themselves? Feel free to come with ideas to what powers the sword and shield should contain, and what items there is to be used to forge these 2 magical items, what processes the players must go through and so on. (I am not so familiar to making magical items, but have read about it in DMG and Magister) Edit: It is a 2nd ed ad&d setting -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Varl Date : 11-26-07 10:50 AM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant Do they have to make the items, or can they undertake adventures to acquire them? What level is this campaign? If you want them to go with the manufacturing route as far as the items go, there are numerous avenues in which you can pursue this. *Commission a smith to manufacture shield and sword. *Adventure to find the sword and shield. *Adventure to acquire reagents to aid in the manufacture of the sword and shield. What is required to destroy the undead giant leader depends on you. It could be something as simple as a sword with a continual light cast upon it, or it could be a holy avenger sword. Same for the shield. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Ferns Date : 11-26-07 12:05 PM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant The group is app. 10th lvl and yes i think they should gather the reagents for the items. But what spells would you recommend to be put in the items and what reagents should be used in the process of this? Any spells that focus on positive energy. Note that most spells which work the best against undead are priestly spells, so your sword and shield are most likely going to be holy items of a religious bent. Good spells for the creation of holy swords and/or shields that work good against undead include Bless, Protection from Evil, Chant, Continual Light, Negative Plane Protection, Prayer, Protection from Evil 10'R, Dispel Evil, Raise Dead, Holy Word, Resurrection, and Sunray. As for reagents required, you might have to inject whatever reagents that power the spells above into the item's creation as well. In other words, if you decide you want Sunray to be the catalyst spell for the creation of your sword and shield items, the character is going to have to first find someone capable of casting Sunray (not an easy feat, seeing how it's a 7th level spell), then while the sword and shield are being cast, inject 100 aster seeds (5 gp each) & 10 sunstone gemstones (100 gp each) [the requirement reagents for Sunray] into the molten metal. The blacksmith (or character himself) then makes the necessary checks to see if he's successful in creating the items. Obviously, you can go as elaborate and expensive as you desire, but whatever the costs involved, they should be relative to the power of the items once completed. A sword and shield that's the bane of this undead giant king you mentioned is a powerful weapon and shield, and not just against this particular undead creature. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : DM_Shonuff Date : 12-06-07 08:15 PM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant I'd be looking into a mage creating a Iron golem..with blessed fists. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Ferns Date : 12-21-07 03:15 PM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant I looked in the monstrous manual under golems, to see how they are created, but there's nothing about that. Any suggestions where to look for that? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : Aurapolis Date : 01-09-08 03:57 PM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant I don't know about 2e, but in 1e the rules for creating golems were found in the DMG under the item "manual of golem creation" or something like that. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Simius Date : 01-19-08 08:31 AM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant The second edition monstrous manual does give instructions (quite detailed actually) for creating golems. Look under the "Golem, general" entry rather than the specific golem type. For instance (abbreviated version): when creating iron golems the caster needs to be a wizard of 18th level or higher, material costs are over 100.000 gp, you need 5000 pounds of iron, an experienced smith. Involved spells are wish, polymorph any object, geas and cloudkill. A sword needs to be incoporated, in case of a magical one some of its properties may be inherited by the golem. Construction time is 4 months I also believe that 'von Richten's guide to the created' (Ravenloft) gives creation rules for certain types of golem iirc -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Ferns Date : 01-20-08 08:22 AM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant Thanks Simius! I completely overlooked the "general" section, i have found lots of material in my 1st ed books and now this --> AWESOME! Actually the players are a few hours of roleplaying from the mage who will instruct them to create a golem, the sword and the shield. So it was just the right time you posted what you did :) I will write a summary of the recipe and the roleplay when the players are through with it. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Mock26 Date : 01-24-08 12:18 AM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant Don't forget to include a couple grand and epic adventurers to recover some specific items to be used in the creation of these items, like maybe some dragon scales from an ancient white dragon who lives at the heart of some giant glacier far to the north (or south). Or, after some of the items have been crafted they have to be taken to a shrine deep in the heart of a jungle where they are to be bathed in a spring of the purest water. I've always loved such quests, especially ones that have mystical ingredients such as fear or stealth or strength and a dawn's kiss or the moon's blessing and such other things. They are broad enough that the players can be creative. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 11] Author : Tarl_Doyern Date : 02-18-08 01:35 AM Thread Title : Re: Weapon and armor against an undead giant For the sword you could need metal (mythril) from an ancient dwarven mine (opportunity to take them to a dungeon). The shield could need to be soaked in holy water blessed by the arch priest or avatar of a lawful good god. Something like that... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:22 AM.
