I've got a player who wants to be a white robed Wiz of HS. He's playing up the arcane vs. technology angle and it's a very interesting character but I'm kinda at a loss as to how the Orders would view him. The DLCS and ToHS seem to indicate that he would be rather unique, but how far is crossing the line when it comes to gnomes/technology and the Wiz of HS?

I've gotten the image that the WoHS don't mind gnome wizards as long as they stay in Mt.Nevermind. The problems start when they set out into the world. But I don't see a problem there either as long as the gnome in question stays out of the spotlight and doesn't give the orders a bad name. Maybe the WoHS might keep an eye on him from time to time, if they have the resources for it (which is doubtful post-WoS).

The key thing to remember is that a WoHS is fully dedicated to his magic. If I had a gnome character like this in one of my games, I may consider a few things, such as having his Test being a choice between technology and magic, or having his tinkering being focused on spells.

In this case, the gnome is still dedicated to magic. He's just approaching it differently, as he's studying magic (probably trying to figure out how it works), and then comparing that to technology.

He may very well focus on item creation feats, becoming an artificer of sorts.

What I would focus on is the gnome's unique approach to magic.

As a side note, I once considered the idea of playing a gnome wizard named Wiz-bang. lol

I have the exact same character concept in my campaign. His approach to things seem to be on an emphirical(SP?) sense and studies every magic item encountered with tenacity. Note that a gnome that has gone for the test has never passed it. The one's in Mt. Nevermind seemed to be quietly overlooked as long as they stay in the moutain.

The strong emphasis, as said in earlier threads would be what is his true dedication to magic?

A Krynnish Isaac Newton, attempting to reconcile magic and science. Grouchy, always distracted and somewhat absent-minded. He has a lab with a collossal multi-dimensional astrolabe (imagine the oracle's house crom The Dark Crystal), littered with hundreds of doodads, disassembled mechanisms, half-completed potions bubbling over ethanol candles, an enchanted telescope that lets you see into the past (but only on Thursdays), a set of malfunctioning magical spectacles he made while trying to recreate Tasslehoff's reading glasses, his cat familiar knocking over a vial of some alchemical lubricant from a high shelf, and you hear his voice from some far-off dusty corner "Now, just a minute, I know I have that damnable wand around here somewheres... Fluffy, what did I tell you about that shelf?!!!" *cough cough* He pokes his head out of the trunk he's been rummaging through, holding a wand. "All right, here it is, one wand of Knock. Now, let's go see about that dungeon."

Give him the Device of Time Journeying, change the familiar to a dog named "Einstein", have a hapless half-kender travel with him, and you've got Doc from "Back to the Future". :D
