Templar question

Ok, so Bob the Black Cossack is a templar of Tyr, serving Kalak. He's an efficient fellow, in fact is level 10 templar and level 8 black cossack. Then there's no more Kalak. He has 18 levels of a spell-casting class, but his spell-casting abilities are no more. What now? Could a templar with a templar prestige class replace his templar levels with elemental cleric levels and have the templar prestige class powers stack, improving his overall spell-casting level? I mean generally what are a templar's options when his spell-granting sovereign goes and dies? An idea I had was a provision in the templar class, or the prestige classes, that should a templar fall out of favor with or have his SM die, he either goes and finds a new guy to follow, or abandons the templar lifestyle all-together. The prestige class levels that enhance spell-casting ability could then apply towards either another divine class (cleric or druid), manifesting level for psi, or an arcane class.

I don't know, I just have trouble accepting that 3.5 is all about balance, and then a class goes and loses a huge chunk of their ability and still advance and are considered balanced with everything else.

The best way to solve this dilemma;
the Templar has to search for another SK to serve or like Pavek from Lynn Abbey books, become a Druid or Cleric, then he should get the full Templar Level to the manifester Level. After all he learned how to cast those cleric spells, he only needs the source .
Arcane and Psionic Levels completly different so he shouldn't get boni for those classes.

So you're saying that bob, who is a templar 5/black cossack 4, with an overall divine spellcasting abbility of lvl 9, loses his SM. He then finds new faith in the philosophy of earth, becoming an earth cleric 1. He is now a templar 5/black cossack 4/earth cleric 1, and casts his spells at level 10. Right?

That's an awesome idea and I should have thought of it on my own or through common sense. That's Luk, what I'm gonna run with.

I'd recommend a complete conversion of templar and templar-type prestige class levels to cleric or druid levels, as opposed to stacking them. Like a Paladin can trade for Blackguard levels. The main reason being, Ibelieve Templars cast spontaneously, and clerics do not.

I think that might be what he's suggesting: His Earth Cleric caster level would be 10th, and Templar caster level is 0 (as is the case with any templar of a city state with no SK)

Yep, that was the though.

The way to do this properly is to create a prestige class called... for the moment the Prospective Supplicant.

It would only need 3 levels.

First level would give you access to secular authority and allow an old templar to cast spells at half level, and exchange half your prestige class levels for more fitting ones. It would also give you a penalty to social checks against Templars of both your new and old faith (distrust and all that).

second would give turning and any other powers I can't think of that a Templar gets.

third would give you access to the remaining half your spellcasting.

each of the three levels would give additional templar spellcasting... so by the end, you don't miss out on any spellcasting ability, but you still suffer from the social stigma of not having been always in your current sorcerer-monarch's service.

It would have 2 skill points per level, good fort and will, cleric BAB.

Something similar could be designed for templars converting to priests or druids... I don't think templar levels should count towards things like wildshape though, only spellcasting.
