My first post to this board got me wondering?......

I'm still running my GH campaign with 1st Ed. rules and sometimes retooling 2nd, and 3.whatever Ed. material back to 1st. Anybody else this out of touch with current gaming trends?

The original AD&D has great synergy with the World of Greyhawk, and I prefer to use those rules for Greyhawk campaigns. For me, this setting is as much about the style of world and game conveyed in the DMG as the brute 'Furyondy is east of Veluna' facts.

This board is fairly 3Ecentric, since it's run by the publishers of the currently produced game, but you'll find lots of AD&D players at Dragonsfoot.

I game with a lot of "old-school" gamers. However, to be honest even the 1st ed players have switched to v3.5 D&D. After a few years of 3.X, I hear some grumbling about switching back to 1st ed, (and even more recently Castles & Crusades), but that notion tends to fizzle out.

Yes, 1st (and even 2nd) edition has a more traditional feel, which leads to more Greyhawk (Greyhawk = tradition to many of my players). However v3.5 has a deep, deep hold on many players that I know with it's boundless customization.

Check out the D&D Out of Print forum under Other Roleplaying Worlds. You'll find plenty of 1e(and earlier) enthusiasts.

Worse, these days, I play nothing but Basic D&D.

my weekly game is 3.5, but I am always up for 1e games when I get a chance to play them.

Yes, There are some of us out here. I have been roped into DM ing a 3.5 game on a PBP board I am a part of, but I prefer 1e and my tabletop games are 1e everytime.

In fact, my moniker at Greytalk on Thursdays is Dino, so I know how you feel.

Ha, I'd forgotten about the sig. Haven't been on this board very often since I started the online DMing.

I generally play 3.5, particularly with my kids, but I am always up for some 1st ed - its where my best gaming years were spent (to date....)

I'm kind of unique in that I don't play D&D as such. My rules set of choice is FUDGE, a rules-light generic game that can be downloaded for free here or purchased in book form.

However, my fantasy FUDGE campaigns still involve the classic D&D monsters, magic and campaign worlds, just integrated with a set of rules I enjoy more.

For inspiration, I use the D&D Rules Cyclopedia, the old "red book" D&D boxed set, the Greyhawk boxed set and a complete set of the hardcover 1E rulebooks.

I don't own any 2nd or 3rd edition stuff unless you count the LGG.

So I guess I kind of know what you mean. I appreciate the "feel" of the older material more and that's why I aim to capture in my games.

I'm a 1E boy at heart, even though I mostly play and DM 3.x these days. In fact, I only just started DMing a 3.5 Greyhawk campaign a few weeks ago.

1E is definitely a better game, but the glossy new 3.5 books are giving my players something to explore. They've already come up with a lot of nit-picking complaints, so we'll probably go back to 2E soon enough. (They like to play with proficiencies so they "know what they can do." :D )

Yamo, interesting link to Fudge. That really takes me back to what it felt like playing D&D first-off at school. It was very rules light then. Hell, half the time we just made up rules as we went along, but everyone was about 11 or 12 and had a blast

It's a great game, but it's not for everybody. Some players just have to have an ironclad rule for everything their characters can potentially do. Rules-light games dont have that. It also takes a very skilled GM to keep everything on track.

Well their's nothing wrong with 1E i played it enjoyed it enough to go thru a few rule changes . However it's not so much the rules as it is the game it self that really makes it for me.

Each set of rules employed have their positives and negatives. However it's not what rules you play by but how you play the game and whether or not it fun for everyone involved that really counts.

I use 1st edition with a few touches of 2nd for my current campaign, though its a homemade world, with some Greyhawk inspiration. My next game will propably be Hackmaster, though Im working on a shined up version of the classic D&D (Mentzer edition)

I prefer the rules light, modular approach and the feeling of the older game

1e player here with a little 2e thrown in on occasions. I have converted 3.X to 1 e for use with my group. I dont mind being a dinosaur in the least. The first edition will always be the best place to play greyhawk.

I was loyal to 1st Ed for along time. (Greyhawk)
My group was not interested in 2 Ed.

After many years, and many moves, I am playing 3.5 (for the last year) with the best group I have ever been with. Most have a fond memories 1 Ed. One started playing with 2 Ed. (I try not to hold it against him.) The youngest member is 11 (2nd geneartion gamer) and has to put up with our walks down memory lane.

Greyhawk still has a place in my heart.
