If an Elf aspired to become the ruler of the Elven People, what barriers would they have to overcome? Right now Githas is not a very popular ruler, being a puppet, and a quarter-human, not to mention he is doing nothing for the cause of restoring the elven people. The Silvanesti are even worse, without a true ruler among them, as they have branded Alana Starbreeze a dark elf, and thus unless recended, she cannot claim the rulership of the people (Not to mention she's all "Woe is me my son is dead" ATM). This indeed leaves a heavy vaccume of power that an NPC or even a PC could take advantage of and perhaps even become the new ruler of the elves.

As for becomming an Elven ruler there would be two ways to go about it. One way is be a member of the Nobility, and claim liniage to the royal bloodlines of the elves. This of course is a long "Burocratic" process as you would have to get the support of other nobles, who likey have mixed alegences (Some still support Alana or Githas, or have their own agendas). Convincing the nobles to support you would probably mean proving that you would be a capable ruler, getting enough supporters to contest the throne, as well as winning out in various integues of the court. Knowing an elven lifespan, and their slow thoughtness, this kind of rise to power could take a good number of years to accomplish, if it works at all.

The second way, is a quicker way, but also one that is just as likey to brand you as a dark elf. Basically the Nobles in any society are a minority. They hold power by birthright, but compared to the people, a Noble population at most is like 5% of the population. That means 95% of the people are commoners or 95 in 100 are not nobles. So to take power, basically the person seeking it would have to have the support of the commoners, and become the leader they want to put on the throne. Next this involves the overthrow the crown (Much like the French Revolution, but hopefully not as bloody). The problem lies that while the commoners are 95% of the population, the Nobles typically are the commanders/eletes of the military. The military may be mostly made up of commoners, but many of them typically support the leaders. To take power by the will of the people, you would either have to convince the military to ally with you, or fight a cival war aginst your own military. So while this would put you into power quicker than the political route, the payoff is that you may have to war aginst your own people. However if the commoners support you, the Nobles can't do crap about it. 5% VS 95% of the population means you get power. The bonus thing is that you don't have to be a noble to actually become the ruler in this methoud, in fact a commoner rising up for the good of the people might have a better chance, than a Noble trying to do the same.

In the end, I believe that the only hope for the elves to retake their homeland is for a change in rulership. They need to get off their butts and start killing some minotaurs already, and taking back what is theirs. A leader is needed to unite the people, and now none exists to take that mantle. This leaves room for a player to become the next elven ruler (Abid they have to be an Elf of course)

He's actually a good deal more popular than that, given that he lead his people to safety and has pledged his life to his subjects. He's not a puppet any longer, and he's much tougher than people think he is. He's certainly not a headcase like his cousin Silvanoshei was.

Cheers,

You know when I did a modified Ghost Blade adventure used the Nexus' Qaulinesti royal family tree as a guide and added onto it to see where the elven ranger in my group fit in. Sure his is a matriarchal line to the throne but is anything happened to Githas he could technically have a claim to the thrown. Good thing part of his backstoy is ducking his responcibility as a senators son and he actually likes Gith... but still.
