I have not had time nor finances to pick up Towers of High Sorcery, which I would hope would answer this question for me. It's on my list of things to get as soon as I am able. Having said that however, I am in desperate need of an answer to this question as it strongly deals with a campaign (of sorts) that I have been working on.

I tried searching the site to see if I could find the answer, but haven't come across anything that will say for certain that Sorc's are Renegades... And if they are not Renegades, well... What about Thorn Knights then? Would it be possible for them to be on the good side of the Tower now?

I am sorry if this question has been asked before, as I said I did search and couldn't find anything... And the search function is really not working well for me at the moment. :P

Sorcerers are all renegades, even the good ones. The Gods of Magic want them to be wizards, essentially, and the Orders of High Sorcery want them to be under their authority. The Knights of the Thorn are all sorcerers, and wouldn't really want it any other way, one imagines.

You can introduce whatever tweaks to this that you like, though. The rules allow for wizard Thorn knights and you shouldn't feel as if you absolutely can't have a sorcerer working with the Orders, but these would be divergent from the current state of affairs.

I don't think one chooses to "be a sorcerror" or even chooses "to be a wizard". ONe has to be borne with certain innane property's with it. So I don't think on a core level that one can choose to be a Wizard or Sorcerror based on how I view things.

THe Entire ORders of Magic when it comes down to it, are just a religious order when one looks at it. They want magic users subscribing to magic the way they define it. It is no different then in the 1500's the entire Protestant vs Catholic movement in my opinion. Magic is magic just like faith is faith. And there are going to be those that want it done their way and to hell with any whom differ.

Now, in the DragonLance world, it is entirely possible that the three god's of magic have flat out said they want magic done by these criteria and thus the Orders have their mandate to enforce it. And it is well known that they don't target wizards that are not THAT powerfull. Examples would be Gilthanus, for example, as someone whom dabbles in magic, but as long as he stay's under a certain level and does not use magic to a certain extent, the Orders would not take any action.
