What would the Athasian Elf be like and look like, when comparing it to true historical cultures?

I envision them as being like the Navahos. What other element would be included? The Mongols without the horses?

Have any ideas? I have been trying to work out designs for the appearance of the Athasian Elf, for an illustration.

I was thinking that the Athasian Elves were more akin to the sterotypical gypsies. They certainly had the mobility of the Mongols. I don't think that they would fit with the native american tribes simply because elves tend to be rat bastages.

My usual method of describing Elves is to say "Imagine if the Gypsies and Mongol Hordes had children..."

They run the whole gamut from wandering traders/entertainers, through swindlers/robbers, to ravening hordes that bring nothing but destruction.

Got to agree with Korvar on that one. That's how I always described them to my players.

I used an NPC to describe them:

"Elves? What do you want with those nomadic thieving bastards? They cheat, steal, rob, **** and murder - they're just as worse as the templars - except the templars don't sell you worthless trinkets they claim are magical, then buy them back from you at twice the price when a cursed templar shows up. An obvious reason for those long legs is so that they can outrun anyone they rob. Those pointy ears of theirs are mighty fine to grab hold of, but unfortunately the bandits hear you from a mile away, so forget about catching them. Stay away from the elves unless you have a desire to be cheated, robbed, drugged, raped and killed, and not necessarily in that order."

I keep meaning to come up with some more Elf culture stuff...

Like they have Corannu as their big Culture Hero; I'd come up with other, minor culture heroes for the various paths an Elf can take. And more on the various swords that each tribe belives to be The Sword Of Corannu, and how that reflects upon the swords each tribe makes.

But I'm lazy...

So, they seem to act like a combination of the Mongols and the Gypsies.

What would they look like (generally)?

Are they great hunters? Can they make usable items from what ever they slay? Are they great trackers? They hunt with the bow. Do they know how to survive in the desert wastes? I thought yes was the awnser to all of these. The Navaho had all of these qualities. Plus some were really into looting for a while. They also were traders (some wore those nifty civil war style jackets, and carried rifles) they did what they could to survive. I don't see how the Navaho culture wouldn't be relevent.
They run the whole gamut from wandering traders/entertainers, through swindlers/robbers, to ravening hordes that bring nothing but destruction.

That would mean that the DS Elves Depended mostly on Civilization, without actually becoming citizens themselves. Civilization would become a crutch which they would depend on.[For trade, and obtaining premade goods through theft]. I just figured that the DS Elves were more flexible than that.

Would the Athasian Elves look more tribal? Fight with face paint? Or would they try to blend in with the other cultures.Would the Elves wear silks and exotic clothing, or animal skins and armor made from hide and bones? Maybe a combo of both?

Or is it more likely that these issues would depend on the individual tribe and its location?

Still lost!

They are. Each tribe is different, and has a different emphasis. Some are traders, some raiders, some just walk the deserts herding their kanks and hunting.

The latter

There must be a lot of Elves out there.

So does each tribe stem off of one culture? Lets say that all the Elves were at one time hunter gatherers, and or herders. Then the influence of the cultures that they have traded with or interacted would change their appearence and way of thought (depending on how traditional they are) though they may still look like hunter- gatherers, with some silk tied around their head. Kind of like Tofu. What ever you spice it up with it takes up the flavor, but its still tofu. Do the Elves share a base culture?

Shell out the measly 5 bucks and download the Elves of Athas book.

The elves have some common customs amongst the various tribes, and interactions with other cultures do not seem to 'rub off' on neighboring tribes.

Elves wear what works. In the desert heat, herding kank, your surely not going to be wrapped in native american style furs.

Agreed.

Elves of Athas from SVGames' Dark Sun Section is a whole $US4.74, and will have pretty much all the information you'll need.
