I'm curious if anyone has used the historical sourcebooks for AD&D and if so what they thought of them. The series started with HR1: Vikings Campaign Sourcebook and ended with HR7: Crusades Campaign Sourcebook. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : Extempus Date : 12-28-07 03:12 AM Thread Title : Re: How's the HR series of sourcebooks? I have The Crusades and The Glory of Rome, but got them more out of curiosity than anything else... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Vrykolas2k Date : 12-28-07 03:22 PM Thread Title : Re: How's the HR series of sourcebooks? I used the Vikings and Celts books to some degree. I have friends who were into the Crusades and Rome ones. They have quite a bit of good info in them, as well as some great character and campaign ideas. They also are useful if you want to use some authentic names, and words from the various languages. They're worth having, in my opinion. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : havard Date : 12-28-07 04:21 PM Thread Title : Re: How's the HR series of sourcebooks? For generic gaming info about the various eras, go get the equivalent GURPS books instead. GURPS Vikings is brilliant. Since you are using 2e, you will no doubt find some use for them, but IMO they are far from the best 2e sourcebooks. I have three and I have not read all the way through any of them. Age of Heroes (the ancient Greece Historical Reference) looks to be about the best. That's the one I read the most of. The Fighter kits are definitely being adopted for my homebrew, which isn't exactly based on Greece, but certainly has some of those influences. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Odhanan Date : 12-29-07 11:57 PM Thread Title : Re: How's the HR series of sourcebooks? I remember the HR sourcebooks benefited from pretty good reviews back in the day in Casus Belli, the French RPG magazine. Its redactors were not morons when it came to historical resources (with Masters and such themselves), and even though these books weren't historically "perfect" or even "deep", they served their purpose as gateways to historically-evocative AD&D games pretty well. If you're into 2E and you like pseudo-historical games, without being to "historically correct" but good on the ambiance, my advice is to get them. :) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : True_Atlantean Date : 01-01-08 11:04 PM Thread Title : Re: How's the HR series of sourcebooks? I was never into the idea of "historical" AD&D but had a couple of fellows in my gaming group who were keen on purchasing them and using them for another campaign. The only consistent reviews I've ever recieved were from Vikings and Celts, which I've been told by quite a few folk were useful, informative and provided good ideas for the campaigns. Heard mixed reports on Rome, but nothing of any of the others. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : slwoyach Date : 01-05-08 09:24 PM Thread Title : Re: How's the HR series of sourcebooks? I thought they were a great series. The best among them are Vikings, A Mighty Fortress, and The Glory of Rome. Didn't much care for Celts or the Age of Heroes, but I know a lot of people who did. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : Monteblanco Date : 01-11-08 08:36 PM Thread Title : Re: How's the HR series of sourcebooks? Although I never used them, I found them to be pretty good. Not only the history seemed to be well researched but the gaming part showed some thought on how to adapt D&D to something more suitable to the theme. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Downloaded from Wizards Community (http://forums.gleemax.com) at 05-10-08 08:22 AM.
