Hi folks,

Back in the days of 1st/2nd edition, we played a Greyhawk campaign which started in 1989 and lasted for about 6 years. The main nemesis of the campaign was based around Iuz's evil machinations in the character's home kingdom.

Recently (within the last six months), three of the original gaming group, and one new member, have started playing D&D again, and our original campaign is about to wind down.

In talking with the DM of our old 1st/2nd edition game, we decided we would roll up the original characters in 3.5, and play a new campaign based loosely on the original idea....but a little bit more grim and gritty.

Instead of just evil machinations by Iuz, he will actively be trying to conquer the lands around his kingdom in an all out bid to control the area - this may be somewhat of a fudge against Greyhawk cannon, but we decided we would like to set the whole campaign around a seemingly hopeless war (ala Lord of the Rings with Iuz and his army's playing the role of Sauron and his armies).

This got me curios as to how you would actually quantify Iuz in 3.5 terms....Is he a Demigod, or just an incredibly powerful character ?

Who and what would be leading his armies as Generals ? Demons, Devils ? Dragons ?

Who would be his chief lietenants ?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I recommend the following publications, as they have specific details regarding the Old One, his "Empire of Evil", etc.

Iuz the Evil by Carl Sargent - great Iuz sourcebook all around. It should be in every Greyhawk collection.

City if Skulls, also by Mr. Sargent, has details on Dorakka. And, it has a Notoriety Score that is a lot of fun for good PCs operating in Dorakka and its surroundings.

Greyhawk Adventures by James Ward has some old Iuz information. It mostly serves as flavor and history in these heady days of 3.5, but still worth catching up on.

Gygax's Artifact of Evil has some interesting chapters that detail Iuz in conversation with is trusted advisors - Null, Halga, etc.

Last, check out the Empire of Iuz entry in the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer (the full 196 page version). It will help bring you up to speed on the Old One's latest efforts - assuming you play around 590 CY.

I'm sure there are other great resources, but I think the above are good for a start.

That`s it for the 2E sources. His original 1E stats from Dragon magazine or the ToEE module are reproduced here:

Iuz is a demigod in GH canon. Check out this thread on dicefreaks for a nice writeup and discussion of his stats for 3.5 rules. The thread also contains many good links and tidbits of info on Iuz and his history.

(The Dicefreaks boards are in the process of ebing moved so if any errors crop up hit reload a few times...)

Gord`s Greyhawk lists teh info on iuz from the Gord books (also some of his lieutenants.)

Duicarthans homepage has 3E stats for most of his lieutenants(The Greater and Lesser Boneheart):

Dragon #294 (p.27-28) gave 3.0 Deites & Demigods stat set for Iuz the Demigod .
Also, as Greyson mentioned, LGG covers some lieutenants and machinations.

If you don't have Iuz the Evil and you want your campaign to have the semblance of canon, then you ought to pick it up on eBay or Half.com. You might want to get your group to all pitch in together to buy it though since it can be rather pricey these days (especially if you want the map with it). But it would definitely be a worthwhile investment if you are centering your campaign around Old Wicked.

The most important thing you need to know about Iuz's armies is that they are commanded by 7 Greater Boneheart and 7 Lesser Boneheart. These are all mages or clerics of Iuz whose levels range from 11 to 20. The Living Greyhawk campaign (currently CY 595) has killed off a couple of these, added a couple, and replaced a couple more but depending on the time period you set your campaign in, this might not matter. If you set it around the time that is pertinent to Iuz the Evil (CY 588), then you need only update the stats of his minions to 3.5 which shouldn't be that difficult. Either way, fetch yourself Dragon #294 (maybe still available in back-issues) if you actually want the Old One's stats or use fan-made stats which can probably be found with a Google search.

Setting the campaign in CY 588 is a nice time to do what you are talking about since Iuz is at the height of his power. He is poised in an indominable position and his empire is larger than ever, encompassing the Horned Society, the northern Vesve Forest, the Shield Lands, the whole of the Bandit Kingdoms, the Rovers of the Barrens and the Howling Hills. In addition he has a tenuous alliance with Ket and a strong influence in the Hold of Stonefist. However most other nations of the world hold him in bitter contempt, as well they should for Old Wicked shows mercy to none. The only thing cramping his style in this time period is the Flight of Fiends, which happened in CY 586, when the Archclericy of Veluna joined with the archmage Bigby to invoke the power of an artifact known as the Crook of Rao to banish the fiendish host on the Prime Material plane back to the depths of the Abyss and the Infernal Nine Hells where they belong. Hence, Iuz's fiendish augmentations to his armies have wanned and he is in the process of rebuilding. But the Lord of Eldritch Evil is a wily one, and Istus knows what aces he may have up his sleeve.
