My understanding is that Thomas of Thelgaard took over after Lord Gunthar retires in 382 AC. I thought he was Grand Master, although I can only confirm that he commanded the High Clerist's Tower in the Chaos War.

Now, at the same time, other sources say that Liam Ehrling takes over after Gunthar in 392 AC (9 SC).

So was Thomas of Thelgaard a Grand Master, or not? And when does Gunthar officially retire?

Thanks in advance.

(Note that I'm cross-posting this to a few forums.)

All indications are that Sir Thomas of Thelgaard only became commander and Lord Knight in charge of the High Clerist's Tower. Lord Gunthar remained Grand Master of the Grand Circle of the Solamnic Knights up until his death and succession by Sir Liam, although he had retired from active command of Solamnic forces. The Lord Knights do all of that anyway - you don't necessarily become Grand Master to lead armies.
