I am looking for new ideas regarding arenas, matches, new twists, etc. I have the "Gladiator's Handbook," and have material from other systems, but am simply looking for something new and different for my players.

Any suggestions concerning arena layouts, match ideas, exotic creatures, and other topics would be appreciated.

I once made a match in the Criterion of Balic. The PC's were naked, with there wrist tied together with gianjt hair and had stone dagger for weapons. They had to fight 3 Gaj. A the center of the arena, the templar put a steel wrist razor on the top of a 4 meter high pillar. I used a random table for the floor of the arena. The pillar were controlled by a psion sitting in the templar private balcony.

Each round I rolled on this table
1. 4 pillar goes up 1d4 meter high in front of the PC making a wall
2. 4 pillar goes up 1d4 meter high behind the PC making a wall
3. The pillar under the PC goes up 1d4 meter high, must make a dex chek or fall
4. The pillar under the PC goes down 1d4 meter, Pc now trapped in a hole
5. Two series of 1d6 pillar each side of the pc goes up 1d4 meter high making a corridor
6. The pillar under the Gaj goes up 1d4 meter high

It was pretty interesting. The Pc had to use their brain to survive and the pillar going up and down changed the dynamic of combat.

The other gladiator combat I made was;

One match in the Tyr stadium; the PC against individual gladiator.

One match in Tyr stadium; All of the PC against 3 giant scorpion.

One match in Urik were one of the Pc had to replace the champion of Urik that had been poisonned. The plot was that a templar made a bet with a noble for the match. The noble was the master of the champions of Urik black pit of death. To make sure that he won, the templar hired a bard to poison the gladiator. The noble could'nt not replace his champion by another gladiator so he hired on of this Pc to replace the champion. The trick is that at that time, the Pc was level 7 and the champion he replaced was lvl 15. So he had to fight like the champion, without removing his helmet and doing the famous trick the champion used.

I also ran the The Great game in Tyr during Kalak transformation. The Pc made indivual fight against lone gladiator, then, there was Team fight, 2 vs 2 and finally, fight against one Braxat and a deserg giant and finaly the melee with the Gaj on the top of the pyramid.

Next thing I want to try is a Ben hur ripe-off. Chariot race in the Nibenay coliseum.
The Raam arena is also interesting for regular gladiator match, but Raam is far away from my campaign objectiv. They are presently in the Forked tongue region and for a long time.

I forgot how creative you can be. I have a ton of material now from that post. I've used some of your other campaign ideas in the past as well. Excellent stuff.

When I came back to gaming, I just didn't have the time to prepare a great deal of material, and I lost four file folders full of DS stuff. I took a lot of your post info and background regarding Tyr.

My players weren't too happy with the outcome. Essentially, three groups of ex-Templars started their own groups to undermine the new power structure. One group was actually quite competent and able to compete with the Veiled Alliance. When the players brought about certain events that made the Veiled Alliance decide to go public, most of the alliance in Tyr was eradicated, two noble houses fell, and Tyr devolved into a tumultuous civil war. I'm editing quite a bit for brevity.

That thread about adventures in Nibenay helped me develop some material for my next game when some of the members return.

Any examples of how you incorporated gladiators into a larger campaign theme would also be appreciated.

An exotic match reserved for special events, called a Rebirthing.

Its all about reanimating dead gladiators and arena beasts, using magic items, templars or royal defilers.

Anyone run arena fights in areas other than the city-states? How did you incorporate it into the game?

Yes, once I had in Inn in Tyr that runned gladiator combat inside (inspired by the movie Fight club). It was a small room were everrybody was standing around and the people fighting were in the middle. The spectator were making bet and such. It was a big round wooden floor (4 meter wide disk) that turned on itself and there was a fence with spike at one place. So you fight and you could impale your opponent on the spike. The wheel was turned by a dwarf slave that was on the level below. The combat was bare handed and no armor. Sometime, the manager of the inn would throw a Clarikal or club on the fighting ground and they had to fight to get the weapons.
