Being a great fan of the wee folk, how do people handle the halfling Master in AD&D or 3.x ?

It hasn't come up yet IMC, but the gaz states that the powers of the Masters comes from the High Heroes. I the way I have my campaigns set up, I could either use one of the halfling Immortal's spell list's for a Master, or create a special list which the three Immortals contribute their power together. My leanings right now are to use a single Immortal's spell list for a cleric, and a special collaborated list for a Master PrC.

My sentiment exactely! IIRC the Master spell list from the Shires Gaz includes both OD&D druid, cleric and magic-user spells as well as a few unique ones. I say make a PrC just as with the Darokin Merchant Prince who also has "special" spells. (the Minrothads I don't know anything about).

Every time I sit down to do a Master PrC, I just keep coming back to how similar the Masters are to druids, rangers, and clerics, and just can't decide whether they would be better left as one of those classes (probably with a modified spell list).

Beau Yarbrough, the MML "Shires Guru", did a 3E PrC for them a long time ago. It's on the Vaults, here.

I recall him saying that, after later supplements came out, he felt that he would have modified things, but I don't know if he ever got around to it (if he did, he never posted it). He hangs out on the ENWorld boards still, though I don't think he lurks around here.

Notably, I know that one recent supplement (Complete Arcane? Complete Adventurer? I forget offhand) had a 10 level PrC with spell level advancement up to 7th or 9th level or so, so seemingly there is no trouble with power creep and the Master might more effectively be modeled that way.

I'd probably try to make the PrC have some of the capabilities of the Druid, Ranger, and Cleric classes, as well as improved Denial abilities.

From the way I saw it, Masters are the hins' Woodland Paladins, so they have mostly druidic and clerics' spells. It would be a nice 10th level PrC. ;)

I'd propably say their role is similar to the ranger. Likely what I'd go with.

No Weasel, a Master is not a Ranger.
Masters belong to a very restricted and secret order and they are taught the mysteries of nature and magic to protect the Five Shires. IIRC they've also got some glimpses of the true powers of the Blackflame, so no, Rangers are not Masters, definitely. Masters are a 3E equivalent of a highly restricted PrC.

I'd even say no to Paladin. The Hin Masters were pretty much clerics (without turn undead) and a modified spell list tacked straight on the end of the normal halfling (fighter) advancement.
I'd agree with the prestige class idea, rather than going with cleric, but it is going to be an odd one...

Wel,l didnt say that they are rangers. Just that its what they are closest to, rules wise. Just restrict as appropriate, for entry into the class.

Though I am partial to the old AD&D ranger, with magic user spells
