With all this talk about a fan-based 3.5 Mystara document, I thought I'd make a contribution. I wrote this up this morning so it is still a work in progress; let me know what you think.

Shepherd of Rad

Shepherds of Rad are the "priests" of the Temples of Rad in Glantri.

Light of Rad:(sp)At 1st level the Shepherd of Rad gains the ability to detect divine spellcasters as a paladin detects evil.

Divine Caster:Through his strong faith at 3rd level a Shepherd gains the ability to cast divine spells as a 1st level cleric and access to one domain of the Immortal Rad. He gains no other cleric abilities such as turning or spontaneous casting.

Smite Divine:(su)A Shepherd of Rad can smite divine spellcasters at 4th level as a paladin smites evil. Once per day she can add her int bonus to her attack rolls and +1 damage per class level. She can use this ability with spells.

Smite Dwarf:(su)At 6th level a Shepherd of Rad gains the ability to smite dwarves.

A couple of notes: in previous editions of the game access to 1st and 2nd level cleric were not granted by a patron deity(Immortal) but by one's strong faith, hence the divine spellcasting ability above.

A see the Shepherds as almost an inquisition-type faith hunting down rogue clerics and plague bearing dwarves, although I don't think there is anything cannon to support this. This is just my personal view. This in why I gave them some of there special abilities.

I debated whether or not to give them a wizards base attack or clerics, but decided on clerics.

Is there anywhere that describes what kind of vestments(colour etc) the Shepherds wear? It might help me flesh things out a bit. Thanks.

Shepherds (no Sheppards! ;) ) of Rad are essentially monks devoted to the cause of meditation and finding out the answer to the greatest mysteries of the world. They preach the word of Rad (which is sometimes definitely too damn hard to understand) every day by hitting the gong with their forehead in search for inspiration.
They are so absorbed in their meditations that rarely leave the monastery and they are not trained for battle. They wear robes and are not interested in going out adventuring , from what we can gather in GAZ3.

So I don't see why they should have powers that have anything to do with combat
I don't believe they should be proficient with armors, and they must have the same weapons' proficiency as wizards have.

I like the contradiction of having anti-cleric clerics...
I remember having a really good laugh when I first read about the head-banging (or whatever) of the Shepherds, but I wouldn't mind seeing a more serious take on them....

Since they are monks, perhaps some martial arts would be appropriate?

I'm not sure how well divine spell casting ability would work in Glantri. I like the idea of the Shepherds as Inquisition types though, even though there is little in the Gaz supporting this...

From Gaz3 pg36:

"Temples of Rad
Alignment:Philosophical, belligerent
Status:Legal, Shepherds of Rad only...

...Shepherds are wizards whose goal is to influence people so they support the "Official Philosophy of Glantri"..."

pg50 "Religion is a crime of High Treason..."

This is where I got the idea of an inquisition-type organization. Of course they are being manipulated by the Brotherhood...

I didn't give them any. If I wanted to be silly I could give them a special headbutt ability...

:heehee

This PrC concept is great. It could represent a branch of the order that is charged with the duty to propagate their ideas and also "protect" the principalities from clerics and their influence. But,
Of course they are being manipulated by the Brotherhood...

Good potential for some cool storylines!

Thanks for the comments guys! My wife is taking me down to Toronto for the weekend for my birthday, but when I get back maybe I'll work on some other PrC. I've got a couple of ideas rolling around in my head. Thanks again.
