In a previous thread, I mentioned that I'm going to be running a new group of PCs through a Balic campaign. I found a few maps on-line, but they weren't quite detailed enough for me, so I drew up this one:

Map of Balic

If it doesn't take you to a large map of Balic, click up to the "pictures" link and look for it. Should be the only thing there that even remotely resembles a map.

[Edit: Sure enough, it doesn't like linking to MSN sites, so click on "Pictures" and it should be the last one posted.]

I guess I didn't put a scale on there, but, since Balic is supposedly smaller than Tyr, figure that all of Balic would fit in the "larger circle" of Tyr (the smaller one holds the golden palace). Balic is smaller, but richer, hence the reason why there's less of a "warrens" area. Also, there is a smattering of theaters throughout the city, as mentioned in the Veiled Alliance book. The Bathhouse is just SW of the Dictator's Gardens, the Templars' Dormitory is the large building SE of the Palace, the large gap around the base of the palace is the Agora (trade emporium). Haven't quite decided where Andy would have kept his orange trees, but I would guess they would probably be in gardens to the NE.

Since my Prism Pentad books are all in Hawaii, does anybody have other locations/descriptions from Obsidian Oracle?

Thats by far the best I've seen yet. Balic and Urik are the only two that haven't yet appeared on Dark Sun Rising so I have been working from my own basic version.

I really like the moat idea with the Shining Bridges all around the bluff. Is that the gladiator slave pen I can see next to the arena?

Here is the half complete version I work from for my campaign btw. I've gone for just a single silt filled gorge with the agora on a rock island in the middle

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/danlewis/balic.jpg

The large building to the right is now a public library but only because we are playing in FY10. I also placed the noble district around the base of the bluff

Not according to several DS sources, but it's kind of arbitrary: it's a fantasy setting, so do what works in your campaign.

Wow, great map! And you couldn't have posted it at a better time. My characters are just about to return to Balic.

As nice as the dark sun rising maps are I really love the hand drawn look you've got. Good job. Any chance you're doing any more Dark Sun maps?

Really good chance. I'm starting up a new campaign with a new group, so expect maps of a series of villages and "mini-cities" (Alturak, etc) on the way out of Balic towards Tyr. I've already done a few maps of the locations in the city.

"The Broken Blade", Sequel to the Tribe of One Trilogy has descriptions of Altaruk...

Murkaf, I love you french-canadians, but I'm going to have to kick ya in the junk if you mention those books - I had just wiped them from my memory: there's no way I'm reading any of Simon Hawkes books unless someone puts a gun to my head. I'd rather eat glass.

Besides, I think Altaruk's described in a few of the sourcebooks, so I'll just build off of that.

And I've drawn Altaruk in a few previous campaigns, but I didn't own a scanner back in those days. :D

The map of Altaruk is in Forest maker scenario book. But its small and kind of suck so I use another map I made. In my campaign, Altaruk is close to the silt sea.

Also, Balic is bigger than Tyr since it have more population and I dont remember reading somewhere that it was smaller. I have all DS book btw, so if you could provide the source, i'l chek.

Forest Maker! I knew I had seen the map somewhere.

As for size things, page 81 of the Wanderer's Journal states that Kalidnay was "as large as Tyr and as wealthy as Balic," suggesting Tyr is large and Balic is rich. And a larger population doesn't necessarily mean larger volume. There's other indicators in other books, but it's just not worth it to look them up. If a larger or smaller Tyr works in your campaigns, go with it.

Inconsistancies.

In Veilled alliance book, they say Balic as more population than Tyr (28 000 vs 15 000). In another book, Tyr is said to have only 12 000 people. I remember reading somehwere (I think in Verdant passage) that the Arena had seat for 50 000 people, and it was full, suggesting that Troy denning considered Tyr to have more than 50 000 population in TYr.

They also said in Wanderer journal that Tektutitlay was the less powerfull of all sorcerer king. Of course, back in the time of old DS box, the sorcerer-king were not champions or dragons, just normal high level defiler.

As for my campaign, Tyr is smaller than Balic with a population of about 15 000.

Here is how I understand it:

The arena can sit 50000 people: It can handle the population of the city AND the surrounding lands (field slaves, etc...)

The City of Tyr has 15000 inhabitants living INSIDE the walls.

The city of Tyr has 12000 inhabitants after the events of "The Crimson Legion" where Rikus, our favorite strategist extraordinaire, kind of lost a whole legion...

I don't know how this holds together, but it's simple.

I'm Peruvian. THE Peruvian Persecutor.

It's not all bad or inconsistent, you know... he uses the same city names as on the map. :D

Shoot me an email and I'll send it to you. It isn't much larger than the one of the website, though, which fits on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. What kind of printer do you have over there?! :D

Well, I have access to a 42" colour plotter at work. The dark sun rising maps look great on a full size sheet. Anyway, private message sent.

OMG! Someone who does not know what Dark Sun Rising maps are!!
Cyrus9a will blow your mind with his stuff, you'll see.

Did you know Dawnstealer draws, and that outside of a two left-handed character in one of his drawings, he's a pretty good artist?! :P
He's single-handedly inking the Terrors of Athas.

Inked. The drawings are all done. Of course, I'm working on a cover, but haven't finished it yet and might not before the big move (Friday, April 29th).
