Anyone come up with something like this, yet? I've made a few for other games, but haven't come up with one for Athas. Figure you'd have to have your generic "waste names" and nick-names and then a series of "city names" for each of the city states.

Anyone have something useable, or will I have to make it myself?

I don't have a name generator, but I do have a system for making up Dark Sun names. Just make slight alterations on the names of prescription drugs (or use as is) like: Gozac, Fallegra, Sudafet, etc.... :D

There a Dark sun generator somewhere, with name generator and NPC generator and such. Last time I saw it was like 6 year ago. There even a cool magical item generator. That was nice.

I have a rhul-than name generator on my site, based on info from Windridders of the Jagged Cliffs. It was on the Unofficial Dark Sun pages... It wouldn't be hard to make another one, if I had the data... ;)

HAHA, I thought the same thing when I first saw some of the Prescription Drug Commercials, but I though the Chemists were naming their drugs after THEIR D&D characters!

:D It's all in how you look at it I quess. Some of my players used my suggested method and other used the reversed name option. I have two halfling characters in my game who used the characters from the mittens cartoons on www.matazone.co.uk, but reversed the names (Pordwons and Snettim). So reversing the names of characters you like can make for interesting names too.

I had a player in a DS campaign who would reverse the names of action movie characters to generate PC names. Obmar, Nanoc, and the infamous Rotanimret.

Some of my players just look about in the room they're sitting in for words they can pick syllables from and put them together in random order.

One player checked the candy names of goodies lying on the table, and swapped the first letter, thus the pterran Pex was born.

As for me, when gaming with people who have no interest in sports, I use names of foreign players in the Norwegian soccer league for NPCs. Azar, Dejan and Madou Ka are examples.

Hmm, I suppose everyone else out there could just use the names of ethnic Norwegian players in the soccer league. :P Though it could lead to some humorous names when translated to English, for example a pair of twins called Odd and Even.

You mean Norwegian soccer players don't pick random syllables, modify drug names, or reverse movie character names to create their patronyms??? :D

I have a lazy player who gives only nicknames to his characters.

The Mask : a psionicist with Kinetic Control who always wore a mask and laughed while enemies tried to injure him (old Hercules cartoons anyone).

And Tiny: a tall Half-Giant.

I added a random name generator to my website.

Test it out, find any errors. If you have other names, for other races that aren't included in the generator, send them to me. It's easy to update the generator.

Not really geared towards DS names, but one of my long time players names his D&D characters by combining first and last names of hockey players (usually Checkoslavakain sounding ones).

His long time charater is named Slava Tchachuk.

Gab, how is the generator supposed to work? (I gather, from quickly glancing at the code, it splits the existing names into random-length sections and recombines the pieces?)

In under one minute of pushing the button, I generated "Gallard", "Agis", "Tectuktitlay", "Wyan", "Sacha" and "Ktandeo" (twice). That may point to a problem in the generator splitting and recombining the names.

I use EBON for all exotic sounded cultures

The way naming usually works, is that one or more names will be very common and a common group of people will have common names. Secondly, names vary from city-state to city-state and village to village. I would use Ebon to generate a list of names for each city based on a culture. For instance, Draj would use an Aztec sounding name etc.

My screenname is of my very first character for Dark Sun. He's named after an arcade game I used to play at the local liquor store called Rai-Den. However, the way the name looked was Ral-Den.

When I use my screename at other forums such as political debates, people assume I am foreigner/muslim etc.

I split the (required) name array whenever the "Generate" button is pressed, then choose a random name from that split. The problem may be with the random number generator in javascript.

These aren't random groupings of syllables. These are names that were taken from various DS sources. The name generator just randomly picks one.

I guess I could've made a name generator that randomly assembles different syllables...

Ahhh, I see. It's not really a "generator" per se, then...at least of the kind I was assuming it was. My bad. (I'd just feel really weird naming my character "Tectuktitlay" :D )

Rhul-Than Sage: Those are the names I included in the generator.

I've updated the random name generator. This second generator uses a random number of syllables to generate a name. I've tried to use the common syllables from the list of Athasian names provided in the website above (also the list given by Rhul-Than Sage). Try it out, and feel free to suggest more syllables.

Except for Half-Elven Druids (Elves are generally too nomadic to become druids, and will have half-elven children for the expressed purpose of making them druids to guard a sacred place for the tribe).
