From a GM view (a Dark Sun GM for the better part of 13 years), Sandstorm is interesting and even has a few juicy bits. For example, the heat tables (Hellish, Hot, Very Hot, Very Cold, etc) are pretty useful. All told, there's probably about 10-12 pages that are really useful to a Dark Sun campaign. At least, one of my Dark Sun campaigns. The book's a good read, but is more useful in a desert Forgotten Realms or something along those lines.

Specifically towards helping your character, elf is a good choice. The elves of Athas aren't as effected by heat and cold (those heat and cold levels in Sandstorm are treated as one level less extreme) and they're equally good (and distrusted) in the wastes and in the cities. Whereas Thri-kreen don't function so well in the cities, elves thrive. If you can talk your GM into making "Waterfind" a feat, that would be a good choice. Survival and skills like it are also a way to go. It largely depends on where you will be starting: desert or city?

Even then, always focus on the fun-factor: sometimes deliberately giving your character a blind-spot ads to the challenge and fun of a campaign.

[ed. Also, you might want to consider a rogue elf for your character. Those rouge elves tend to be made fun of. :D ]

Aren't frogs short, squat and green? doesn't sound like an Athasian Elf to me...

Maybe it's an Elf with ranks in Profession(Hoe).

There is a lot of good material in the Sandstorm book. You just have to pick through it pretty thoroughly. The rules for enviromental conditions look pretty solid, some of the presitge classes can work almost as is, and a lot of the spells are great. Most of the non-divine related feats are perfectly suitable in my opinion, and most of the monsters wouldn't be out of place. You can definately ignore all of the racial information including the new races, that stuff is no good for the setting. Unless you want to introduce a new race emerging out of the desert or in a new region of the setting.

Unfortunately, the biggest problem with using 'Sandstorm' is that you have to read through it and modify it yourself. They couldn't use the material therein for the Athas.org releases even if they wanted to, because its not open game content.

Speaking of which, it would be really nice of WoTC, if they would release any of their new material as open game content .

Pie in the Sky.

Btw, about Sandstorm, who think there is something missing?

I, for once, wanted to see rule for madness when you start dehydrating.

Anybody as come up with something like that?

Starvation is far more effective for madness. As you starve, the higher parts of the brain are shut down to preserve energy. This leads to animal like acts and sometimes brain damage.

Sandstorm seems to me to be another desert world apart from Dark Sun.

It is very Forgotten Realms-like.

If I were running Sandstorm with a Dark Sun players. I'd make the players under normal Dark Sun rules and have them travel to the Sand Storm lands (maybe plane travelling) and interact in that world which is governed by normal Forgotten Realms rules (the characters would have higher stats and a sort of hero campaign would ensue). Also, Sandstorm is a paradise compared to Athas.

Yeah, I know but do you have any game mechanic for madness in this particular situations (aka starvation)?
