Do the Hylar of Thorbardin still ride horses? Or at least, did they prior to the Tree of Life being destroyed?

sheesh! why don't just walk up to one of them and ask if they're really related to Kender! :D

I don't think the Hylar of Thorbardin have since the Dwarfgate War, but I can see them still being used in the mountains around Kayolin.

Ahh, I haven't gotten to the Dwarfgate War yet. Maybe that will explain things further.

That war would be detailed in a little book called "War of the Twins". :D

Basically 30 to 40 years after the Cataclsym when the Mountain Dwarves sealed themselves in Thorbardin for the next couple centuries they probably didn't have much use for the Hylar Riders of the Plain (or whatever they were called).

Actually, the mounted Hylar continued to be extremely effective after the founding of Thorbardin (they were used with great effect to drive out human settlers moving into the mountains). Also, the horses were used in the original mountain homeland of Thorin and then brought over to the Kal-Thax region of the Kharolis Mountains. They were never plains horses.

I think the Dwarfgate Wars may actually be detailed in the Dwarven Nations trilogy (not the first book though)...

No, the Dwarfgate War is not mentioned in the Dwarven Nations Trilogy because that trilogy takes place thousands of years before the Cataclysm. I'm saying that the Hylar of Thorbardin used the horses for thousands of years. They used them around Thorin AND around Thorbardin before the Cataclysm. But after the Cataclsym, when the Mountain Dwarves of Thorbardin closed their gates to the Hill Dwarves, the Hill Dwarves and human plainsmen tried to force thier way into Thorbardin with the help of Fistandantilus. That is the Dwarfgate War. I'm saying that once the Hylar shut themselves underground for 300+ years they stopped using the horses.

The Dwarves of Thorbardin grow crops within their warrens (thanks to lighttunnels or something like that) IIRC.
So I can see no reason, why they can't have some of their special horses after the end of their isolation-prediod.
At least in my version of Krynn, they do.

Even if the horses within Thorbardin died out, there are still Neidar out there, who surely would have been able to feed their Hylar-horses and who surely would have found some use for them.
If not all Neidar, then at least those who have Hylar ancestors.

Yes they do. The Klar do most of the farming for them though (or used to). But that was only just enough for their clans under the mountain.

So I can see no reason, why they can't have some of their special horses after the end of their isolation-prediod. At least in my version of Krynn, they do.

Well the only problem here is that first of all they were isolated for almost four centuries before they started to emerge (in Thorbardin). Then about eighty years later they barricaded themselves underground again. So it's not like they've had much time above ground since the Cataclysm.

Even if the horses within Thorbardin died out, there are still Neidar out there, who surely would have been able to feed their Hylar-horses and who surely would have found some use for them. If not all Neidar, then at least those who have Hylar ancestors.

Well I tend to think that the Hylar Horses of Thorbardin would have been destroyed in anger or given to the plainsmen and barbarians of the region.

Now this only holds true for Thorbardin however. In Kayolin the Hylar remained in power and mostly kept access above ground so I can definately see some Hylar Horses still surviving there, but that would probably be it.
