Hello all. I am Delerak, and I am founder of a MUD (multi-user dimension) that is a text-based online game where you can roleplay, engage in combat, and hundreds of other things. I have a few questions for the people here, the name of the mud is Darksun MUD, and we are using the material of the Darksun campaign, (Sorcerer-Kings, City-states, etc) I am trying to get permission from Wizards as we work on the mud, lots of hard work has already gone into it and before we open for Beta testing (we are in Alpha right now) I would like to get it to use the setting.

Now on another note, I am looking for good writers who would like to help build the game world, people who know about MUDs in general are preferred but if you are a good writer, we can help you along with the commands and how to get into the OLC (online creation). Builders are a unique people, and we're short a few builders.

As far as the code goes for the mud it's a DIKU derivitive and is pretty solid, and we have our coders, but anyone who is familiar with the C codebase can shoot my head coder an e-mail and we'll talk. He is darksun@darksunkings.com.

The webpage is
www.darksunkings.com
To connect.
the above site and port 5040 in a telnet client, or mudding client like zmud.

Now does anyone have any idea's on contacting Wizards for the permission to use the Darksun setting and material in my mud? Should I use e-mail, written letter, or just let it fly and hope they don't ask me to shut it down in Beta when it starts getting played? Thanks for reading this far and I hope I can get some answers here and maybe gain a few fellow Athasians who want to help with the project..

Regards,
-Delerak

Good idea and good luck - Wizards might release the rights to Dark Sun when penguins skate in hell. Troy Denning and Tim Brown have been trying to get the rights to the setting for years, and they created the thing.

You'll have to let us know how it turns out; if Wizards loosens the leash a bit, there might be hope that Tim or Troy could get ahold of it.

Yeah, I love their work, read the books a lot to get a feel for the world, my mud is going to revolutionize the Darksun genre I guarantee it.

Just be aware that if you push through with this, you may end up with, at the very least, a cease and decist order from Wizards of the Coast. One thing they are rather picky about is "interactive computer programs" - ala Games. You might want to save yourslfa TON of frustration, and run by your idea through them to verify i's OK.

A MU* is little more than a tabletop game online. The staff are the DMs, and each player character is controlled by a player. The only elements WotC could object is the coding of non-OGL material, like the advancement table (which is easily handled by the DMs) or if the staff of the game attempts to charge money to the players.

There are already a lot of D&D MUDs, MUXes and other D&D online games, I don't think WotC has ever asked any to close down.

Just make sure you aren't mistaking D&D, which IS OGL, for Dark Sun, which is not. It's one of the reasons why Athas.org and others, myself included, have to be very careful with what we put out.

As far as art goes, sure - I'd be glad to contribute. I'm working on a couple other projects right now, but I might have time to squeeze in a few sketches. If you want to use some of the monster drawings (or coins, or weapons, or whatever), go ahead: just make sure you give me credit somewhere.
