A question of succession in the County of Urnst.

I have a couple of scenarios that I'd like to run by your learned minds. Let me set up the backstory:

My PC, Valen Gellor-Esche is the son of the Countess Balisica of Urnst and her husband, Vogan Esche (although he went by many other names). Vogan was an adventurer and was a character played by a friend of mine. This campaign has spanned about 25-30 years and my PC will (reluctantly) inherit the title of Count of Urnst upon his mother's passing.

My question is who does the County of Urnst actually pay fealty to? The LGG says "in theory" it's the Great Kingdom (if memory serves my right) and, to a lesser extent, the Duchy of Urnst. My PC is busy being a Dragon Slayer (just like Daddy) and is doing his best to avoid anything involving any real responsibility in matters of state. As part of my PC's backstory and subplots I am considering forming some sort of alliance through marriage with the Duchy of Urnst, unite the countries and declare himself the first King of Urnst.

I'd be curious as to what's going on in Living Grey Hawk (just for ideas, my DM has his own thing going on obviously) and just your thoughts on how this might/could be worked out.

As far as what was recently going on in LG, I thought I heard the CoUrnst was dealing with something of a near civil war. Don't know if it was resolved...

Interesting. Anybody have any details on this LG scenario?

I tried really hard to find out what was going on - even trawled the yahoo sites.

I think it involved diabolic posession of Belissica and the Lord of the East (name escapes me) - probably escaped devils from Vetnor. Belissica's situation was discovered and she was indisposed. A proxy had to take over, along with rumours of ill health, death, or that there had been a coup, and nobody would produce her to disprove them so a battle for succession ensued - driven by the possessed Lord. I don't know how it was resolved, but I think that all those who were possessed were saved and all was well.

I can probably dig our further info but its saved on disc at home. If anybody actually played the mods, I'd certainly like to know what went down for my own CoU Gazeteer.

The Countess of Urnst is beholden primarily to the Duke Palatine of Urnst, Karell Lorinar (or whoever is in charge down there now IYC) AFAIK.

Now the issue is ycomplicated by the fact that (IIRC), the Urnsian Senate basically flogged the County to the Great Kingdom in the mid 2nd century CY about 50 years before they themselves submitted to the suzerainity of the Overking in Rauxes.

There's also the complication that Nyrond invaded and occupied the County soon after the kingdom broke ties with Aerdy, no doubt extracting oaths of fealty from the the Count of the time. These might have been set aside, however, when Nyrond gave up its occupation of the Count.

At that time (again this is just from memory) I seem to recall that the County was again made subject to, but effectively independant of the Duchy Urnst.

In LG - I'm not really sure what's going in the County at the moment. I do recall that there was a civil war plotline where the Lord of the East rose in rebellion against the Countess.

Thanks guys. So far IOC everything is pretty quiet in Co. Urnst. It was so peaceful and nice the last time our characters were there that we couldn't wait to leave. I'm sure I may see something (as to what, who knows?) develop there now as my DM lurks here and I'm sure he's read this thread.

I guess this is one of the problems with using LG stuff in a home campaign. Every realm in the Flanaese is in similar trouble after all, what if your region just happens to be peacefull and quiet like Keoland used to be.

Yes, because after centuries of no excitement, it would suck to have something happen to a nation that would raise the pulse. All those hordes of adventurers who flock to stagnation will be made so angry that they'll have to find another place where nothing exciting happens.

Which is an unfair generalisation since it is not true. for example, look at European meta-region. Big upheavals are few and far between and that's how we like it.
