My group is interested in finding and playing the most infamous and well-loved classic adventures out there for 1st or 2nd edition. As we have recently learned that 1st edition stuff is easily adapted to 2nd, we want to run down all the best stuff that we never played because we didn't know we could! Anyways, if any of you cats wanna hit me with some suggestions, that would be grand. Doesn't matter if it's supposed to be super deadly or not, we just want to play the well-known classics with good stories. We already know about Tomb of Horrors, of course, and are in the process of finding a copy. Thank you for your time. I'd rather be in Waterdeep. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 2] Author : RedWizard Date : 02-13-08 09:59 PM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? If you want the greatest series of modules (in my opinion) then you have to run your players through these modules, Against the Giants (Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl and Hall of the Fire Giant King), this leads into Descent into the Depths of the Earth which leads to Vault of the Drow and culminates in what has been ranked the best module of all time, Queen of the Demonweb Pits (You get to take on Lolth). I like to add the Slaver modules at the beginning before the giant modules (SLave Pits of the Undercity, Secret of the Slavers Stockade, Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords , In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords) because they were optionally meant as a lead in. There, you have an entire campaign made up of all excellent 1st edition modules. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 3] Author : Handsome Stranger Date : 02-13-08 10:19 PM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? Hard to go wrong with A1-4 or GDQ already mentioned. Lots of people love I6 Ravenloft for the horror element, some folks hate it for going where D&D was not meant to go. Some gamers love U1 for the thinking it requires, some hate it for the Scooby-doo element. Don't overlook T1-4 The Temple of Elemental Evil. Dungeoncrawling, problem solving, and some politicking. I3-5 the Desert of Desolation is good, but a little railroady. The UK series gets some mixed review. Dwellers of the Forbidden City is another oldie but goodie. N5 (IIRC) Treasure Hunt is a nice starter for a campaign. If you can find it, anything by Paul Jaquays from Judges Guild is worth it. I've always been a fan of The Caverns of Thracia N1, Cult of the Reptile God is a fun one. The C modules have some great ones. Ghost Tower of Inverness for example. S1-4 are fun, and I actually think Tomb of Horrors is the worst of the bunch. White Plume Mountain is an absolute classic. Barrier Peaks weirds some people out with the spaceship, but Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth is da bomb. WG4, Lost Temple of Tharizdun is another favorite. Old Dungeon magazines, and some of the old Dragon magazines are excellent sources. When in doubt, you can go to Dragonsfoot and check out their reviews if you're interested. Good luck, and welcome to Dungeons and Dragons. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 4] Author : RedWizard Date : 02-13-08 11:43 PM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? As the previous poster stated the U series with the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, Danger at Dunwater and The Final Enemy are all excellent and make a perfect "beginning" for any group. from there you can hit the slaver modules whose tie-ins have already been mentioned. Come to think of it, you could have a whole campaign from 1st to 14th level by simply running the U series into the A series into the GDQ series. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 5] Author : RealmsRunner Date : 02-14-08 01:13 AM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? Some gamers love U1 for the thinking it requires, some hate it for the Scooby-doo element. Thanks all, for the help and advice. One question though: what is U1? Sounds like we would love it. You'll find my name scratched into the bar at The Thirsty Throat, The Copper Cup, The Three Pearls, and The Elfstone Tavern. You can't name a tavern in Waterdeep that I haven't puked in. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 6] Author : Extempus Date : 02-14-08 01:28 AM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? U1 is The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 7] Author : RedWizard Date : 02-14-08 12:23 PM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? What is U1, in a word, FUN! It's in my opinion the best 1st level module you can play as it composes 3 modules that will make your forget your playing 1st level. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 8] Author : Handsome Stranger Date : 02-14-08 01:21 PM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? A word of caution on the U series, though: That power curve is steep. Danger at Dunwater will kill you if you're not on your A game, and The Final Enemy can TPK a group which is anything less than outstanding and lucky. Still, I love Sinister Secret to death, even if I admit the Scooby-Doo criticism applies. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 9] Author : RealmsRunner Date : 02-14-08 04:30 PM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? Thanks again everybody. I've been over at Dragonsfoot reading reviews. I now have a plan....mwa ha ha. The U series sounds great, and I definitely have to get I6 Ravenloft, and the Tomb of Horrors. Barrier Peaks sounds workable too. We like it weird. Thanks for the help. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 10] Author : Tarl_Doyern Date : 02-18-08 01:26 AM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? One adventure my party had a lot of trouble with was TOMB OF THE LIZARD KING. We were newbies and got killed almost to the point of absurdity, it made for a quick learning lesson on survival. I really enjoyed L1 and L2. They gave me a great introduction to how the players were going to play the older edition and they also gave ma a great place to add in other modules. Another good module that I have played was S4 Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. I had fun but others in the group would disagree (silly Bodak killed alot of them :D ). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 12] Author : Handsome Stranger Date : 02-21-08 07:22 PM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? Not exactly my most substantive post, but when I didn't mention L1 and L2, that is purely a reflection on my own addled, senile mind. In no way is it to be taken as a slight on the excellent work done by the masterful Mr. Lakofka. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- [Post 13] Author : cavemanjed Date : 03-04-08 11:32 PM Thread Title : Re: Greatest Adventures Ever? My favorite to this date is still Under Illefarn Start off as a wimpy ass militia man, goes on to a full on dungeon crawl. Good times.
