#1AmarilJun 20, 2005 16:44:23 | Without any comments about how psionis do or don't belong in Greyhawk, has anyone placed the Expanded Psionic races in their World of Greyhawk? Specifically, I'm curious about half-giants, elans, maenads, xephs, and dromites. |
#2armitageJun 20, 2005 18:42:08 | I have, but except for the Elan I've limited them to specific geographic areas. Half-Giants: North-east Sea of Dust, at the foot of the Hellfurnaces and Sulhauts. Maenads: Hestmark Highlands Xephs: Ino Forest (Hepmonaland) Dromites: Beneath Old Aerdy West Blues are only born to goblin tribes in the Sheldomar Valley. Brain Moles only live in and around the Dim Forest and Oytwood. Udoroots only grow in the Phostwood. |
#3AmarilJun 20, 2005 18:47:25 | Interesting, I was tempted to put Xephs in a secluded section of Rift Canyon. It's big enough that they could have lived unnoticed for some time. I am tempted to make Elans as an experiment among humans, turning them into enhanced incubators for Mind Flayers. This would be a good reason for some of them to ally with Githyanki illithid slayers. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20050620a |
#4armitageJun 20, 2005 19:12:04 | Interesting, I was tempted to put Xephs in a secluded section of Rift Canyon. It's big enough that they could have lived unnoticed for some time. It's probably a matter of my interpretation of their habitat. I was thinking more "forest in a rift in a bigger forest", rather than "forest in a rift...somewhere." Plus they're listed as Warm Forest and the Rift Canyon is Temperate, and I'm picky about stuff like that since I went to the trouble of organizing every terrain feature in the Flanaess by climate. :D |
#5zombiegleemaxJun 20, 2005 22:49:39 | I've often thought about this myself. Elans blend seemlessly into the setting as they can simply be something no one has ever discovered before. Maenads are almost as easily blended into the campaign. I would probably say they have isolated communities in the Kron Hills, the Wild Coast, Bluff Hills, and Flinty Hills, although they are on the brink of extinction as a race. Half-giants would be an extreme rarity found mostly in mountain communities. Dromites would have communities in the Rift Canyon and gaps in the Crystalmist Mountains. Xephs would be from the forests and roughlands in and around Sunndi and the Tilvanot Peninsula. Thri-Kreen would inhabit the Bright Desert and the Sea of Dust. The others are traditional D&D monsters with psionic variants so they don't really need adaptation. This is just how I would do it. I'm sure there are plenty of other things that would make sense. My main objective would be to make sure they aren't extremely prominent races. That way, you maintain the flavor of the setting better. |
#6MortepierreJun 21, 2005 1:43:59 | Quoting the wonderful (2E) Dark Sun accessory Thri-Kreen of Athas:On Oerth, thri-kreen are rare. They are unknown in the Bright Desert, though there could be a few scattered packs in the Dry Steppes. Stories are told of thri-kreen packs roaming the Sea of Dust beyond the Hellfumaces. Thri-kreen of Oerth are similar in almost every way to the red-shelled J'hol, and have the standard chances for psionics. Hope this helps.. |
#7gv_dammerungJun 23, 2005 9:16:04 | Quoting the wonderful (2E) Dark Sun accessory Thri-Kreen of Athas: I have always used the Thri-Kreen as the major non-human psionic race in the Flanaess. While I haven't had cause to place many of the "new" races in GH, I think this is a fascinating topic. With respect to humans, I've always imagined that what distinguished the royal and noble houses of the ancient Suel was a propensity for psionics, making the ancient Suel arch-mages both powerful wizards and psions/psionics. |

This would explain the presence of psions and psychic warriors in the Scarlet Brotherhood. http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20020623c |
#9zombiegleemaxJun 23, 2005 10:37:41 | The only psionicists that are primarily known in my campaign are the followers of Xan Yae and Zuoken. There are half-giants and thri-kreen but not in the Dark Sun sense they aren't any more pscionic than the PC races. If I were to place any of these races wholesale I would think the eastern fringes of Lynn and some more exotic southern parts of Oerik would fit okay. |
#10AmarilJun 23, 2005 11:59:50 | You know, Maenads might be fitting for coastal areas of the Bright Lands. |
#11AmarilJun 25, 2005 8:37:51 | The only psionicists that are primarily known in my campaign are the followers of Xan Yae and Zuoken. Yeah I think I would require that psionic PCs would only worship these two dieties, or at least Zuoken. I've toyed with the idea of Tharizdun having psionic worshippers who can hear him speaking to them in their dreams. |
#12AmarilSep 15, 2005 17:20:33 | This is a pretty interesting topic and I thought it might be good to bring it back to the top of the list. |
#13zombiegleemaxSep 16, 2005 5:44:20 | It is a good topic. And I think it opens up for additional ideas unrelated to the title of the thread, such as -- which classes generally follow which deties in Greyhawk? There should be some parameters established both regionally and class-based. Also, which other races would you allow in your Greyhwak campaign? Personally, I was thinking of giving a larger attention to the Kenku after reading the MMIII entry. Kenku rogues, scouts, sorcerers -- they could be fun! --Ghul |
#14AmarilSep 16, 2005 10:39:41 | Good idea. You should start a new thread about that. |
#15zombiegleemaxSep 17, 2005 13:26:34 | I brought out a Blue in a random encounter last week against the party...the party of low Will saves mind you. Imagine the 4 letter word adjectives that describe personal displeasure in encountering such a small but potent opponent. :D As for the races,...I'm sure they could be worked in somewhere. Probably a very low number of them around. |
#16ripvanwormerJan 25, 2006 21:12:28 | It's probably a matter of my interpretation of their habitat. I was thinking more "forest in a rift in a bigger forest", rather than "forest in a rift...somewhere." I thought they'd fit well a little further north: That valley looks rifty to me. |
#17AmarilJan 27, 2006 10:40:13 | Here's a hypothetical question. What if Rhennee were made to be naturaly psionic. Being from another plane called Rhop and not really having a pantheon could make them somewhat fitting as psionic characters. The Vetha PrC could be construed as a psionic mystic. Again, this is mostly me just trying to brainstorm something here. * Medium: As Medium creatures, Rhennee have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size. * Rhennee base land speed is 30 feet. * Naturally Psionic: Rhennee gain 2 bonus power points at 1st level. This benefit does not grant them the ability to manifest powers unless they gain that ability through another source, such as levels in a psionic class. * 1 extra feat at 1st level. * 4 extra skill points at 1st level and 1 extra skill point at each additional level. * Automatic Languages: Common, Rhop. Bonus Languages: Any (other than secret languages, such as Druidic). See the Speak Language skill. * Favored Class: Psychic Rogue . * Level Adjustment: +0 Thoughts? |
#18AmarilJan 29, 2006 10:13:32 | Not so much, huh? |
