I had an idea the other day, so i wrote it down, and i'd like some feedback.

Near the start of the age of Mortals, the Kagonesti realized that they would need a special force to deal with special problems. The tip of the lance, an elite and secret fighting force to deal with Draconian and Minotaur raiders. So the Elite kagonesti Outriders (title in progress, please make suggestions) were formed.
The Kagonesti gathered their bravest warriors and most skilled archers, and in secret Trained them in skirmish tactics and something unique- the training and riding of dire wolves. For months they trained and perfected their art.

The Kagonesti Outrider



The Kagonesti Outrider serves as a member of the elite fighting force of the Kagonesti. Sworn to protect their homelands, they secretly fight all over Ansalon, defending the Kagonesti way of life.
Hit Die: d8

Requirements
To qualify to become a kagonesti Outrider, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.
Race: Kagonesti Elf
Base Attack Bonus: +6.
Skills: Ride 8 ranks, Survival 4 ranks, Handle Animal 5 ranks
Feats Weapon Proficiency (Longbow), Mounted Combat, Mounted Archery, Point Blank Shot
Special: The character must befriend and train a dire wolf.

Class Skills
The kagonesti Outrider's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Craft (Int) Handle Animal (Cha), Jump (Str), Knowledge (geography), Knowledge (nature), Listen (Wis), Profession (Wis) Move Silently (Dex), Ride (Dex), Spot (Wis), Survival (Wis)
Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the Kagonesti outrider.

Mounted Weapon Bonus (Ex): A Kagonesti outrider gains a competence bonus on his attack roll when mounted. This Bonus starts at +1 at first level and increases to +2 at third level.

Ride Bonus (Ex) A Kagonesti Outrider gains a competence bonus to ride checks. This bonus starts off at +2 at first level, and increases by +2 every two levels after.

Increase Speed (Ex) At 2nd level and higher, the kagonesti outrider's Dire wolf mount can move faster than normal. Add 20 feet to the base speed.

Improved Mounted Archery (Ex) At 4th level, the Kagonesti Outrider's skirmish training increses. The penalty you take when using a ranged weapon while mounted is decreased: 0 instead of -2 if your mount is taking a double move, and -2 instead of -4 when your mount is running.

Full Mounted Attack (Ex) At Fifth level or higher, a kagonesti outrider can make a full attack with a ranged weapon when her mount moves further than 5 feet but no more than a single move action would carry it.



This isn't done yet, and I am very open to critiqu (as long as it is constructive) and suggestions. I'm sorry if the format is hard to read. Please leave suggestions! Also, working on a ten level prestige instead.

Edit** changed the wording on the ride bonus to make it less confusing.

This sounds like a really cool class. The only things out of place I can see is that the Kagonesti don't really have any sort of government. Each tribe is more setup as an independent body and so they have no overall racial military. The lioness on the other hand has been gathering elves to her banner ever since she killed her first knight. You could even sya that the Outriders were formed as part of a defensive unit when the qualinesti were forced to leave Qualinost. The outriders would be kinda of like the Griffon Riders or the Wildrunners. Of course this would give reason to open the class to other elves as well.

As I am sure you know, this sounds a lot like the cavalier class just with less levels.

Yeah, i really hadn't thought about the cavalier similarities, but when i looked at the claass a second ago for the first time it's way too close, so i'm in the process of comepletely rethinking the class, and making it ten levels. Also, as far as the government thing i think it would make sense if each tribal elder selected one or two warriors from their tribe. Just a thought. I'm also looking at seperate prestiges for All 3 races of elves. I'm running a pretty elf heavy campaign, so i would like to add something for each race. Ideas for the Sil. and Qual. Prc's would be welcome.

for the organizational side how about making them a new warier society.

That would fit in good with there quasiy Indian(native American if you prefer) culture.

Well you do realize that the Qualinesti & the Silvanesti both already have the Griffon Riders (don't know is there is an actual Prc that covers this though). Towers of High Sorcery plays off of this with the Griffon Wizard Prc. And of course the Qualinesti have the wildrunners. Whta you might want to do is to make one overall class that is open to all elves but is mainly used by the Kagonesti.

This is an interesting class adaptation.

The only portion that I would re-arrange is the fact that the Outriders *should* have a long and established history among the Kagonesti tribes. I would think that given their chaotic past, the kagonesti surely would have seen the need for such a group of specialists during a much earlier period than the Age of Mortals.

Agreed. That's a wonderful idea. It would make sense, considering it's a secret organization that they might have been around awhile. Working on the revised class, should have it up tomorrow.

I'm not really a mechanics-man. My main interest with DL is the source material.

However, I'm willing to give it a go. What type of features are you looking to include?

So you're talking about new and original class features? Not features that have been published before but you think would suit the Outrider?
