What's the current political situation in Solamnia, did it become a unified nation again post WoS? Or is it still divided into city states and decentralized authority?

Years 39 SC and 40S C is still fighting to unite the Solamnia (Dark Knights are taken out), but in the end of 40 SC Solamnia seems to be united again.

There is then Regent ruler (Lord Regent) in Palanthas (not knight). And Knighthood is divided in three orders based on three different cities with dukes (knights). These work under the ruling of Recent Ruler.

Thelgaard (Crown), Solanthus (Sword), Caergoth (Rose).

Then 42 SC the peace is shattered again when huge goblin (+draconian, mercenary, Dark Knight) army is united under ruling of Half-Giant (with help of Hiddukel).

I very much recommend reading LORD OF THE ROSE.

This sample chapter gives history nicely (even years are wrong): http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=books/dl/lordrosesample

How does Sanction come into play?

Sanction is held by the Solamnics and is the center of Solamnic operations on the continent while the plains are being retaken. Lord Tasgall is based there, governing the Whitestone Council. It's unclear from Doug's book what role Liam Ehrling has to play in the unfolding events, or where some of these other major characters come from (where was Bakkard DuChagne for the earlier part of the Age of Mortals, for example) but we have yet to see books two and three in the trilogy.

Cheers,
Cam
