Sorry, couldn't find the original thread.

The Myrmeleon takes energy to cast a spell directly from his orb, so I think he should get a Bluff bonus when attempting to cast a spell in public, since there's not a iota of visible energy gathering involved.

IMO you don't see the energy tendrils of energy gathering unless a wizard is defiling, so I see no reason to include a bonus for drawing energy from the orb. Preserving has the same visible aspect as using the orb. The Bluff check is about passing your spellcasting off as something else than spellcasting, which is pretty hard with wisps of energy flowing up to you and an ash circle spreading out nearby - hence the -20 modifier for defilers.

Thanks for the response.

Are you sure there are no instances in Prism Pentad where Sadira preserves and obtains visible tendrils of energy?

I'm quite positive I remember a few instances where Sadira's energy gathering is visible (not for sure if it's when she's defiling, though). However, in a few different sources it describes the gathering of energy as producing a green flow of energy into the hand of the wizard.

Actually I just found one example, so I'll just quote that - an excerpt from Defilers and Preservers (p12)-

The Color of Magic
The energy that infuses living things appears as a vibrant green glow emanating from some internal source. Ordinarily, this living energy is invisible. When a wizard draws upon it to power his spells, it becomes visible for those few brief moments of contact, then fades for the range of normal senses.
When a preserver draws energy form the land, the source radiates the green light of life. Tendrils of bright green energy flow into the preserver, while ribbons of a vibrant but less brightly colored glow flow from the preserver back to the source. This shows that the preserver draws in the living evergy, takes a portion of it to power his spells, and returns the rest to the source. The returning energy isn't as dynamic as it was, but it still appears healthy and alive.
A defiler, on the other hand, absorbs the tendrils of bright green energy until the source's glow is extinguished. There are no ribbons of returning light, only remnants of a sickly pale-green energy seeping from the defiler like kank nectar spilling from a full mug.

I would think these things would be perfectly visible to anyone under the effects of detect magic, but generally not to other people. Otherwise, it becomes impossible to cast any spells secretively if anyone is looking.

As long as there's a feedback thread handy, should a leech's life draining radius treat areas with animals in them as "fertile" (or maybe just one terrain level up) like a dragon's does? Or was that dexcrepency intended to keep dragons more powerful?

Sage, did you check your private messages? (if the answer's no, that's cool too)
