Are medallions of faith take up the magic necklace slot like an amulet of natural armour or a periapt of health?

Yes, a medallion of faith takes up an amulet slot. Of course, you don't have to wear it all the time. You could probably stow the thing and bring it out when you wanted to present it against undead, etc.

The real problem is that you need it as a divine focus for a lot of spells, which can make putting it away problematical (especially if you use a weapon and shield).

Seeing as how it is a medallion, put it on a really strong chain (like a necklace) and tie it to you belt. Then it is within easy reach and does not take up any slot because it is not worn. Or you can get really creative and enhance the item itself by adding to its magical properties by making it a amulet of natural armor, or amulet of health, or how about this a periapt of wisdom (but in medallion form).

i was just thinking that its an item specific to a cleric and was gifted to them by the gods...hey i have another question when the medalion is used to create another its basically a clone rite but with whicever deity, would that mean that it would pass on any enhanced magical properties...for example a medallion of faith that has been enhanced to grant the cleric +2 wisdom would create a medallion of faith that grants +2 wisdom...

I'd almost be tempted to house rule that a basic medallion of faith doesn't take up the amulet slot for purposes of magic items. Provided, of course, that the medallion doesn't have any other powers.

I'd rather house rule it than have every cleric coming up with bizarro ways to utilize their medallions w/o taking up a valuable body slot.

This is exactly what I do. I don't hand out many amulets or neckalces as it is, but I take the medallion of faith and do the same with it as the spell components. I assume you have them unless you are naked or imprissoned. And I certainly don't make it take a magical slot, for me the medallion is nothing more than a regular piece of jewlry, so its not a big deal for it to be worn along with another item in that slot.

I have never had holy symbols take up a space unless it has specific magical properties- the medallion of faith is something that I see as non-magical in the sense that it really does nothing aside from making other medallions for other clerics- so if you think about it it is really not a magical item because the cleric cannot command it to make a new holy symbol- that is for the gods to decide.
