Yea, the 2E Ravenloft had sections for Kalidnay, including the main rules (I think RL2). They got Kalid-Ma's gender wrong, but basically the Domain of Kalidnay was an island surrounded by silt on all sides, and massive dust storms blocking a little past those (a rendition of the mists). The High Templar of Kalid-Ma (if memory serves) butchered all of his relatives to help his monarch achieve the final Dragon Metamorphosis, and that act sealed his pact with the Dark Powers, Kalidnay was whisked away to Ravenloft, and Kalid-Ma's conscousness was placed into 5 obsidian orbs of varying sizes (Nytcrawlr and I believe 3 of those are on Athas, 2 are in Ravenloft--but there is nothing absolutely stating that). Of course, for Dark Sun, Kalid-Ma was stopped and slain by other Sorcerer-Kings, and they destroyed Kalidnay. Personally, I think that the Dark Powers set it up to make the Sorcerer-Kings think that is what happened, while the real Kalidnay did get swept into the mists of Ravenloft. Just like I make it possible for players to slip into Ravenloft if they delve too much in the ruins of Kalidnay. |

#4zombiegleemaxSep 21, 2005 22:28:45 | aaah, i see! could it even be said that the psyches in the obsidian orbs are not kalidnay's but rather a fragment of the essence of the domain of dread? ~B-) |

The orbs don't have Kalidnay's (the city) essences, but the consciousness of Kalid-Ma, it's Sorcerer-King. The Orbs are explained in Psionic Artifacts of Athas. The Ravenloft book is Domains of Dread or something like that, from 2E. |

Well, the idea of those orbs was that if one was to find all 5 of them, bring them together, it would make Kalid-Ma return. I guess you could make it the living essence of Ravenloft...but I don't really see the point. One of the big reasons that Nyt and I both like to have the orbs divided between Ravenloft and Dark Sun is that way, it's virtually impossible to bring them together. |
