#1eldersphinxSep 25, 2005 16:17:27 | As promised earlier, here's a writeup for the faenare windsingers from PC2 Top Ballista. The original windsingers were available as a Level 1 power boost for exceptional faenare PCs, gaining druidic spells to their progression and some magical 'songs' that functioned as additional spells; I've built the PrC to work best as a druid/bard, in response. Since 3E druids have many extra abilities that are lost when taking a PrC, the spell songs become spell-like abilities available on top of caster progression, as a balance. DMs who dislike this change can rework the songs as unique spells, easily enough. Of course, since this is 3E, the divine spellcasting requirement can also be achieved by taking levels of cleric with the Animal and Weather domains, or replacing the bard level with one of rogue or even monk. Allows some flexibility, which is 3E's real strength. ---- Faenare Windsinger The windsingers are leaders, mystics, and visionaries among the reclusive faenare - individuals who have demonstrated both a strong devotion to the natural world and divine calling, and also a broad aptitude for the song and music that are at the core of the faenare culture. Windsingers are often mercurial, unpredictable, and more than a bit wild. A sense of isolation and wanderlust is common to all, and while many faenare adopt the path of the windsinger do so in order to help protect and guide their clans, they invariably take time away from the clan to travel abroad and see new things. Other windsingers choose to wander alone or with a few friends, seeking enlightenment and new experiences away from the home ranges. As a result, windsingers are incredibly rare, but have the potential to be found anywhere. Requirements: - Race: Faenare (raptoran) - Knowledge (nature) 8 ranks, Perform (singing) 8 ranks - Iron Will and Skill Focus (singing) feats - Ability to cast 4th-level divine spells, including Call Lightning and Summon Nature's Ally IV Hit Dice: d6 Skills: Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (nature) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Listen (Wis), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), Spot (Wis), and Survival (Wis). 4+Int skill points per level. Armor and Weapon Proficiencies: Windsingers gain no new proficiency with any weapons or armor. |

#3CthulhudrewSep 25, 2005 19:54:08 | I'm torn. I really like the writeup and the way you dealt with the powers, but at the same time, I don't like that it doesn't lend itself to the possibility (mentioned in PC2) that there might be other songs (perhaps even epic songs?). Not sure how best that could be handled, though, except (as you suggest) making up actual "spells" for the songs, and then doing something like giving them levels- "1st level Windsong" or something, that the Windsinger could choose from. Will look over it more and see if I might be able to contribute any suggestions or anything, but it looks like you did a pretty bang up job here! |
#4havardSep 26, 2005 4:21:17 | I like this! Did you do a conversion of the Faenare race already? IMC I gave them the bard as a favored class, so it at first surprised me that windsingers required divine spells. Ofcourse the options you offer to make the PrC more accessible do help, and when I consider it, Windsingers as priests of Faenare society make alot of sense. Cant remember if they were described as such in Top Balista, but I like the idea. Perhaps they are sort of like Druids of RW celt societies where the Druids were independent of the clans and acted as sages, priests and judges... More songs are always possible. I think the best way to introduce such is as feats. Feats would require at least one level of the windsinger PrC or simply the Windsinger Songs ability. Each song would probably enable the casting of a few existing spells once or more per day, or could offer other effects similar to the class abilities above. HÃ¥vard |
#5eldersphinxSep 26, 2005 13:51:26 | All: Thanks for the good feedback. havard: I haven't done a serious conversion of the faenare race myself; the above writeup assumes that the Raptoran writeup is usable with only minor tweaking. PC2 had all Raptorans receiving shaman-style spellcasting ability, so Cleric or Druid might work as well as a favored class as Bard. Cthulhudrew: Yah, once the class is entered the power progression is not entirely flexible. One possible solution for this would be to use Havard's suggestion of converting the windsinger songs to feats; new songs could be acquired with additional feats, or substituted for the current lineup. I doubt I'd write up any new songs myself, though - converting the canon is contribution enough on my part. I'm enough of a faenare fanboy already. :D |
