#1penknightOct 01, 2005 17:34:08 | Hey, guys. In my campaign, one of my players has decided to play a ranger at 1st level and was wanting to choose a mist claimer as his favored enemy. The thing is, what does he write down? Page 61 has them under "Elementals", but page 108 gives an example of a character as being (Augmented Humanoid) (Mist). So the question is, how do I have him write it down? Thanks for any help. |
#2RunningWilderOct 01, 2005 18:30:05 | Have him take Favored Enemy: Humanoid (Mists). It'll give him his bonuses against any humanoid creature with the Mists subtype. Now, this means that mist claimers patterned after vampires and monstrous humanoids won't give him the bonuses, but he can up those as he rises in levels. EDIT: They listed under elementals because they are examples of Mist taking form. In game mechanics, they're just a copy of the character who has been given a bunch of bonuses and made uber evil. |
#3penknightOct 01, 2005 18:48:11 | The character is from Mordent, to give you a bit more on his background. A year ago when he was 17 he was engaged to his childhood sweetheart. He even once stated that nothing could ever seperate them. The Mists took that to be a challenge and responded with a Mist Claimer. The next night, he was going to meet his beloved and found that she had already left to meet him at the local church yard. Of course, he had never met her off alone like that before, and immediately took off running in the direction of the church yard. He made it there just in time to see her being killed by his own hands. After her lifeless form hit the ground, the figure turned its gaze to him and disappeared, leaving only mocking laughter behind and the careless words upon the air that had been uttered by his own lips... "Nothing in this world will ever be able to seperate us." So because of this, he becomes a ranger and vows that something like this will never happen to anyone else again. He begins to wander the land helping those he can, waiting for the time when he will face himself one last time. I am sorry if this all seems kind of jumbled together, but I just wanted to give a brief summary on his past instead of the whole thing. Thank you very much for the information, I'll let him know. |
#4RunningWilderOct 01, 2005 20:00:45 | Nice idea. Is he planning on taking the Avenger PrC? |
#5penknightOct 01, 2005 22:48:27 | He was thinking about it, but decided to be L/G instead. Plus, he didn't want to be a George Weathermay rip-off. He wanted to operate off of a "bound by his word, sacred vow" type person. He is wanting to pick up the Knight of the Shadows PrC instead. |

He wanted to operate off of a "bound by his word, sacred vow" type person. He is wanting to pick up the Knight of the Shadows PrC instead. Ah, nice choice. Is he welcomed in Mordent, or is he a wanted man? If he was the last one seen with the victim... You could have a Lamplighter hunting him down and see where that goes. |
#7penknightOct 02, 2005 0:06:34 | He is welcome in Mordent. Also, he is found the next morning lying next to her body. We are still trying to figure out whether he fainted or if he was possibly struck by the creature, knocked unconscious by the blow. (Making him 0 level when this happens.) He also wanted to have the clerics of Ezra cast spells to prove his story and then have the Weathermay-Foxgrove twins come in and interview him about his encounter. That way, he learns his beloved's slayer truly was. Also, he thought that it would be kinda cool to be interviewed by the twins and have him as one of the eyewitnesses they corroborated with about the Mist Claimers for the Guide. Oh, and what would the appropiate Knowledge skill be for these creatures? I know there is Fey Lore, Monstrous Human, and things like that as listed under skills for the Weathermay-Foxgrove twins, but I am wanting to make sure I cover all my bases at this point. He also took the Haunted feat and of course his fiance's spirit watches over him, keeping him company. He also raised an interesting question. He was asking about the engagement ring his character gave her and perhaps being given it back by her parents, and if it could have some type of power or ability because of their bond together, making it an item that would only work for him. I know what the Gazetteer says about Mordent being buried with items that meant a lot to them in life, but when a player shows this much interest in a character how can you turn them down? So I was wondering about what ability/abilities it might have, what level he could/should acquire it, and things like that if we decided to use it for the campaign. Also, thank you for showing such interest in my campaign, Wilder. |
#8RunningWilderOct 02, 2005 21:58:17 | Sounds like a great campaign, Penknight. Maybe you should consider writing up a journal of it for the Fraternity of Shadows site. |
#9penknightOct 02, 2005 22:42:10 | Thank you for your kind words. If I may inquire, are you a member of the Fraternity of Shadows? And also, what would the appropiate knowledge skill be for the Mist Claimer? Thank you again, Wilder. I will definetly consider the idea. |
#10thanaelOct 03, 2005 14:31:20 | Sounds like a great player and campaign. You should definately join the FoS site. Normally Mist Claimers rise due a secret desire voiced by someone. What was his? Is the original Mist Claimer still around? Does his beloved know that it was not him who killed her. Also he could head for the Lamplighter PrC perhaps. |
#11penknightOct 03, 2005 14:57:03 | The book Van Richten's Guide to the Mists also states that it can be more of a challenge issued, though perhaps unknowingly. That is what we shot for with this character. The original Mist Claimer is still around, and he will be making an appearance in a few levels to discredit the character to the party. His beloved (named Sarah) is the spirit that haunts him, which is why he took the Haunted feat. The answer is yes, she does know that he is not the one that killed her, but a Mist-born creature. She does not blame him, and stays with him aiding him in his hunt for the Mist Claimer as well as the other creatures that haunt the people of the Land of Mist. She stays out of love, and knows that one day they will be reunited. He does blame himself for her death, however. He feels that it was his fault she was killed and is tortured by this thought late at night, tormented by the vision of what he saw in the church yard that fateful night. By the way, I just joined the FoS last night. |
#12penknightOct 03, 2005 16:50:32 | Hey, everyone. This is going to seem a bit confusing I think, especially to me. I am the player of the ranger mentioned. A friend of mine wanted to use the boards for some advice on the campaign but didn't think that he would need or want to look at much stuff on them. Luckily, I was able to convert him over ro the "Dark Side" of gaming (which is Ravenloft), and also to making his own account on the boards. From here on out, it will actually be me. Just wanted to clear that up. Thank you Running, for all of your advice on my character. It has really helped out a lot. I am still wanting to do something with the engagement ring though. I was thinking about maybe giving it deflection or something, but not really sure what to do or where to go with it. Any suggestions will be VERY appreciated. I was also thinking about writing a short story about my character for the Fraternity of Shadows site. But writing a story and playing through one are COMPLETELY different. Any other questions you have I will try to answer about my character. Maybe you will ask a question that I haven't even thought of, thusly fleshing out my character even more. Again, thank you Running, for all of your help. |
